Videos: Chris Rock’s favourite stand-up comedy specials could be the best list of TV comics ever
An embarrassment of hilarious riches.
Comedian and actor Chris Rock’s list of his 13 favourite stand-up comedy specials may be old-school, but it’s certainly a stellar list of comedians. His favourites, which include specials by Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, George Lopez and 2003-Ellen DeGeneres, is rich and inclusive in its diversity and range of humour. Watch No. 1 on Rock’s list above, and the rest below.
The list features names that may not be familiar to the younger millennials, for many of the specials date back to the 1970s and 1980s. But they all had long, seasoned careers in comedy, albeit in distinctly varied genres. The genres for each special vary – political, observational, ruthless, clean – yet their validation lies in their skills, and a genuine sense of comedy.
From Dave Chappelle’s sardonic truths and George Carlin’s brutal social critiquing to Paul Mooney’s edginess – who makes the list for “more edge than anything you are ever going to see” - and DeGeneres’s expressive humour, each comedian on the list has one thing in common – they’re unarguably funny.
