The late great Raj Kapoor remains something of a legend across the former Soviet republics. It all started in the 1950s when Kapoor’s films like Awara and Shree 420 were screened across the Soviet Union. His films, with their socialist leanings and hopeful, proletarian, Chaplinesque heroes, resounded deeply with the people.

It’s no surprise, then, that the Kazakh singer in the video above sang such a beautiful rendition of Awara Hoon, the memorable song whose tune was composed by Shankar Jaikishan, originally sung by Mukesh in Awara. Delighted patrons at the restaurant happily danced along.

The song has found a home not just in India or in the former Soviet countries, but also across West Asia, China and Africa.

In 2015, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kazakhstan, he was greeted with a rendition of the same song, Awara Hoon, as you can see in the video below.

A video of a popular singer from Uzbekistan, Bobomurod Hamdamov, singing the song also went viral in 2015 when some people mistook the singer for the President of Uzbekistan.
