This is what the classic ‘My Funny Valentine’ would have sounded if composed in Carnatic style
Chandana Bala Kalyan is back, this time with the number made famous by Ella Fitzgerald.
Without the title revealed, it would have sounded naggingly familiar and yet new. But, of course, this is Carnatic singer Chandana Bala Kalyan pulling off yet another one of her Indian raga-style rendition of a jazz standard. This time, of My Funny Valentine.
Kalyan has done it before with, among others, the Dave Brubeck jazz classic Take Five. My Funny Valentine has been covered, at last count, by over 600 artistes in more than 1,300 albums. Still, it’s unlikely it has been sung in this manner before.
Here’s the eternal Ella Fitzgerald version of the song, written by the renowned pair of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart.
