The chief minister of Bihar, Jitan Ram Manjhi, on Saturday declared that his government was ready to declare the state drought-hit if it fails to receive any rainfall in the next two or three days. Manjhi said that after consulting weather experts and agricultural scientists, he would wait until August 15 to decide whether to make the decision According to experts from the Indian Meteorological Department, 60% of the state has experienced a deficit in rainfall of between 40%-60%.
Survey of Telangana residents causes a stir
The Telangana state government's decision to commission an Intensive Household Survey to determine the number of people eligible for state grants and aid, has been seen as an attempt to target Seemandhra natives, especially in Hyderabad. Income Tax Department finds holes in Himachal CM's returns
An Income Tax Department report on the sale of apples worth Rs 6.5 crores from Himachal Pradesh chief minister, Virbhadra Singh's orchards in Shimla, have indicated serious anomalies. Among other items, it has questioned the use of oil tankers and scooters to transport apples. "Being a tipper/oil tanker/scooter these vehicles were not in a position to be utlised for carrying the apples," says the report. Singh came under the scanner after he revised his income tax returns for three years, beginning from 2009-'10.
Bangalore couple held for severely assaulting minor maid
Bangalore Police on Sunday arrested a couple for severely assaulting their 13-year-old maid from Darjeeling. The girl's sustained severe head injuries and is on life support. The maid was allegedly beaten up for not working fast enough. Police have said that the couple are prima facie guilty under the Child Labour (Prevention and Regulation) Act, 1986, as the girl is below 14 years of age.
