GDP up by 5.7 per cent in April-June quarter
India's Gross Domestic Product increased by 5.7 per cent in the April-June quarter, up from 4.6% in the previous quarter. Growth in this quarter was the highest since March 2012, and it was sparked by a boost in the manufacturing and service sectors. However, economists said that this rebound could be temporary and stifled by poor monsoon rains and rising food inflation.

Modi says he's disappointed by Pakistan talks with separatists
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that he was disappointed by the Pakistan government's decision to meet separatists from Kashmir before proposed bilateral talks between New Delhi and Islamabad on August 25. Modi's said that the Pakistan government tried to create an unnecessary "spectacle", though he did signal his intentions to increase efforts to pursue bilateral ties. In laying the conditions for future negotiations, Modi said, “Any meaningful bilateral dialogue necessarily requires an environment that is free from terrorism and violence."

Bihar government discovers 7.7 lakh fake ration cards
Bihar government's Food and Consumer Protection Department on Friday discovered 7.7 lakh fake ration cards during an internal review. The first seeds of doubt were sown after it was discovered that there were no takers for these cards. District magistrates in the state have been asked to cancel these cards and investigate into how these cards were made. Total loss to the state exchequer emanating from distribution of these cards was Rs 3.2 crore per month.

Rahul, Sonia Gandhi to not campaign during UP by-polls
Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son and Vice President Rahul Gandhi will not be campaigning for the party prior key assembly by-elections in 11 constituencies around the state of Uttar Pradesh. The All India Congress Committee on Friday had released the names of 35 "star campaigners" from the party that included  other senior leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad, Madhusudan Mistry and Beni Prasad Verma.

Will consider alliance with CPM, says Mamata Banerjee
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said that her party Trinamool Congress is willing to ally itself with any party in the state, including her bitter rivals the Communist Party of India (Marxist). She emphasised that no political party was considered "untouchable" for an alliance. Her comments came after she congratulated bitter foe-turned alliance partners Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar, on their victory over the Bharatiya Janata Party in the recent assembly by-elections across Bihar.
