Pakistan government keen on reigniting diplomatic ties with India
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday sent a package of special mangoes from his country through "official channels" to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi. This move is seen in Indian diplomatic circles as Pakistan's initial attempt to rectify the damage caused by its High Commissioner Abdul Basit's meetings with separatist leaders from Kashmir last month. In response to these meetings, India had cancelled foreign-secretary levels talks with Pakistan scheduled for August 25. Meanwhile, there is speculation that Modi and Sharif might conduct bilateral talks on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly summit in New York later this month.

Jammu and Kashmir braces for its worst floods in decades
Incessant rainfall since Sunday has raised fears that the state might suffer from its worst floods in decades, especially in the southern and central areas of Kashmir. Water levels in the Jhelum river have crossed the danger mark and the region is on high alert. On Thursday, over 70 people were feared dead after a bus carrying 50 members from a marriage party was washed away by floods in Naushera sector along the Line of Control. The state Meteorological Department has predicted that heavy rains are likely to continue unabated till Saturday morning.

School exams in Delhi to have material from Modi's Teachers' Day speech
Schools in the capital will go the extra mile to express their respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as they seek not only to telecast his Teachers' Day speech, but also test young students on its contents. According to the Hindustan Times, students will have to stay back after school, as the speech will be telecast from 3 pm to 4.30 pm. Parents have been asked to pick up their wards from school because the 1,000 Delhi Transport Corporation buses hired by over 95 schools will not be available to drop students home due to traffic congestion in the evening.

Bhushan wants CBI director removed from coal scam probe
On Thursday, advocate Prashant Bhushan filed an application on behalf of the NGO Common Cause asking the Supreme Court to direct the chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation to keep away from the coal scam probe. He alleged that Ranjit Sinha, who had earlier shown the coal scam status probe report to executives of the companies accused of being involved in the racket, had repeatedly overruled investigating officers and forced them not to register FIRs in case.

UP sounds alert after al-Qaeda threat
Uttar Pradesh went on alert after the al-Qaeda terror group released a video on YouTube threatening to extend its activities to India. State IG (Law and Order), Amrendra Kumar Sengar, said steps have been taken to keep the peace.
