Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday called for cooperation between the Central and the state government, saying that “cooperative arrangements” between the two administrations were necessary for the development of the national capital. While Kejriwal admitted that he had political differences with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he added that it was also “important to have synergy” between the two governments as well. “We should have a working arrangement irrespective of our major ideological differences,” the chief minister said during his Independence Day speech. However, the Aam Aadmi Party leader did not refer to his government’s continuing row with state Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung over the appointment of top bureaucrats in the state.
Gujarat: State declares ban on plastic
Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Saturday announced a complete ban on the use of plastic in the state. Patel said that the decision had been taken keeping in mind the “protection of environment, cattle health and cleanliness”. Many municipal bodies in Gujarat have already banned the use of plastic bags thinner than 40 microns.
Maharashtra: Police likely to question Radhe Maa again
Officials from the Mumbai Police on Saturday said that they were likely to summon self-proclaimed god-woman Radhe Maa for further questioning over her alleged involvement in a dowry harassment case. An official said that the police had completed recording the statements of all the seven accused in the case. A 32-year-old woman had alleged that Radhe Maa had instigated her in-laws to demand dowry from her. The spiritual leader has denied all the charges against her.
Punjab: Two suspended over upside-down Indian flag
Two policemen in Punjab were suspended on Saturday after a state Cabinet minister unfurled an upside-down Indian tricolour at an Independence Day event. Officials said that the mistake was noticed only after the minister, BS Majithia, had delivered most of his speech at the Guru Nanak Auditorium in Amritsar. The district administration said that it had recommended strict action against the district’s Superintendent of Police. District Deputy Commissioner Ravi Bhagat said that a magisterial inquiry had been ordered into the incident.
West Bengal: Official, son arrested over bribery complaint
A West Bengal engineer and his son were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau after Rs 24 crore, gold ornaments and diamonds worth over Rs 14 lakh were seized from their home in the Howrah district. ACB officials said that they raided Pronab Adhikary’s residence after they received bribery complaints from a local builder. A senior ACB officer said that the two were suspected of having sanctioned illegal building plans.
