Eight people were killed after a building next to the the Manikaran Sahib Gurdwara in Himachal Pradesh caved in due to a major landslide on Tuesday afternoon. Ten people were injured in the incident. Kullu Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kanwar said that the bodies of the eight victims had been buried under huge boulders. More people were feared trapped under the debris.
Chhattisgarh: CRPF jawan killed in Maoist encounter
A Central Reserve Police Force jawan was killed and three others were injured in an encounter with the cadres of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) at Timapur in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday. The injured were air-lifted to Raipur for treatment. One of the injured CRPF personnel said that their group had been returning to their camp after a combing operation when the Maoists opened fire on them. He said that the gunfight lasted for over an hour.
Delhi: State CAG targets power firms
Delhi's Comptroller and Auditor General on Tuesday blamed power distribution firms in the state of cheating customers by inflating costs to make up for their own inefficiencies. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal later said that if reports quoting the CAG's assessment were verified, the state's citizens would benefit as power tariffs would "have to be brought down". However, power distribution company BSES denied the allegations, saying that the report was "factually incorrect and distorted".
Tamil Nadu: Congress leader seeks security for Elangovan
A Tamil Nadu Congress Committee leader filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court on Tuesday, seeking protection for TNCC President EVKS Elangovan. The petition said that workers from the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam were threatening Elangovan because of his critical comments on the meeting between state Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. AIADMK workers and leaders have held protests across the state, claiming that Elangovan's comments had defamed the chief minister.
West Bengal: Mamata mocks Congress leader's protest
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday made sarcastic remarks about a demonstration at which Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury took off his shirt to protest against the Trinamool Congress leader. Banerjee compared Chowdhury's style of protest to a similar gesture by former Indian Cricket Captain Sourav Ganguly. Chowdhury alleged that some Congress workers at the demonstration had been beaten up by the police.
