New Delhi: Toll rises to 17
With over 1,900 fresh dengue cases and 12 deaths reported over the past week, the total number of people suffering from the vector borne fever has climbed to 3,791. The toll, according to a municipal report released on Monday, has shot up to 17, even though unofficially the figure is thought to stand at more than 20. The latest dengue victim was a 36-year-old woman from East Delhi who died in a private hospital in New Delhi on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Monday sought the response of the Aam Aadmi Party government on a plea seeking a direction for it to to immediately release funds allocated for malaria and dengue-control programmes to municipal bodies in the capital.

Tamil Nadu: Swamy moves court on cricket team controvery
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy on Monday told the  Madras High Court  that the Chennai Super Kings  cricket team in the Indian Premier League tournament had been unfairly suspended. He alleged that the "most popular and most successful" of all IPL teams had been treated unfairly. He said that he had incriminating materials about the case that could only be submitted confidentially to the court.

Himachal Pradesh: Trapped workers rescued after nine days
Two of the three workers trapped in a tunnel in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur were rescued on Monday, nine days after the structure collapsed. One worker has not been found yet. A National Disaster Response Force team managed to safely evacuate two labourers from the rubble of the 1.2 km tunnel, which is part of the Kiratpur-Manali expressway road project.

Bihar: EC warns against anti-women statements
Ahead of the Bihar assembly polls next month, the Election Commission has warned candidates and political leaders against making statements during campaigning that are repugnant to the dignity of women during campaigning. The poll watchdog has also asked political parties and their candidates to maintain high standards during the campaign, saying it was putting all political parties on notice that any violation of Model Code of Conduct and use of intemperate, abusive language would invite action.

Maharashtra: Custody of accused in Bora murder extended
A Mumbai court on Monday extended the judicial custody of all three accused in Sheena Bora's murder by a fortnight, till October 5. The accused are the victim's mother Indrani Mukerjea, Mukerjea's ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna, and her former driver Shyamvar Rai. Their last spell of judicial custody of 14 days ended on Monday.
