Police in Imphal forcibly removed social activist Irom Sharmila from a makeshift shelter outside a government-run hospital on Friday. She was using the shelter as the site for her latest fast against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. Sharmila was was taken for a medical check-up after she refused to eat or drink. “I will continue to fast till my demand [the withdrawal of AFSPA] is met." she said. "The order of the sessions court that I am not attempting to commit suicide [by launching fast to remove the controversial Act] is welcome," she said.
Telangana: State faces acute power shortage
Residents of Telangana are bracing themselves for massive power cuts that could last up to 12 hours in certain districts. Hyderabad will face daily power cuts of six hours and in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Nizamabad districts the citizen's ordeal could stretch up to eight-12 hours. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao has ordered the purchase of 2,000 megawatts of power from Chhattisgarh.
Bihar: CM encourages Dalit youths to enter inter-caste marriages
Bihar Chief Minister Jeetan Ram Manjhi on Thursday urged a a gathering of Dalit students to marry outside their caste to become a political force in the state. "Dalit youths should go for more and more inter-caste marriage," he said. "If we have to become a political force, we need to take our population from 16% to 22%.”
Kerala: Christians can now opt for burials
The bishops' synod of the Syro-Malabar Church has allowed members of its flock to cremate bodies instead of burying them. Churches across the state are facing a shortage of space in their graveyards. The SMC, however, said that their decision was not entirely based on this space crunch. "While burial requires space, consigning bodies into flames can cause environmental problems if carried out in private places,'' said Father Paul Thelakat, a spokesperson for the Syro-Malabar Church. "Only public crematoriums have facilities to conduct such last rites without environmental consequences."
Delhi: Government clears DDA housing scheme
At a meeting chaired by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, state government officials on Thursday cleared a Delhi Development Authority's housing scheme that seeks to provide 25,000 flats to customers across all income groups. The government is likely to make an official announcement about this on Friday. Brochure sales will begin at the end of this month and the draw for allotment of flats is likely to be held after a month. The flats are likely to be priced between Rs 14 lakh to Rs 1 crore.
