Refugees break through barbed-wire fence at Greece-Macedonia border
Macedonia had closed its borders to refugees last week, leaving thousands of asylum-seekers stranded with little to no food or medical help.
Refugees stranded at the border between Greece and Macedonia broke through a section of the barbed-wire fence on Monday using a heavy metal pole as a battering ram. Television footage showed Macedonian police firing several rounds of teargas to disperse the refugees trying to push through the fence. It is not clear how many of them got through, according to the BBC. An AFP report said the protest occurred several hours after Macedonia allowed only 300 refugees to cross before closing the border again.
Macedonia closed its borders to refugees last week, which left around 6,500 stuck on the Greek side of the border at Idomeni, a village near the Macedonian border. Located just north of Greece, Macedonia has been a common passageway for refugees travelling into Europe, including those from conflict-ridden regions like Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. They have been living in squalor for a week, with little to no food or medical help.
