Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw on Monday described India as a friendly country and said that no insurgent group will be allowed to use its territory to attack India, as he met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, reported PTI. Swaraj, on the other hand, promised that India will provide “all help” to the new government.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup told PTI that the two countries discussed a host of issues, including bilateral ties and cross-border militancy. He said, “Myanmar leadership is looking forward to a very productive partnership with India.” Apart from the president, Swaraj also met State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi. This was the first high-level meeting after Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won last year’s election and ended military rule in the country, reported the Hindustan Times.

Myanmar’s assurance in important in the backdrop of growing militant activities along the Indian border. In June last year, the Indian Army thwarted insurgency attempts by such groups. On Sunday, the army had a face-off with militants of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) who were trying to enter India.
