A man was arrested for suspected arson after a fire broke out at a karaoke lounge in southern China on Tuesday, killing 18 people and injuring five others, The Guardian reported.

The fire broke out in a three-storey building located in Qingyuan city in China’s Guangdong province just after midnight on Tuesday, police said on their official account on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, reported Reuters. The fire was extinguished shortly before 1am local time.

Police said the suspect, 32-year-old Liu Chunlu, was captured in a nearby village. The police had offered a 200,000 yuan (approximately Rs 25 lakh) reward for information on the suspect, which led to the arrest of Liu who had burn marks on his hip, reported AFP.

China’s state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) reported that the suspect got into an argument with another man, used a motorcycle to block the building’s entrance and then lit a fire at the door, according to The New York Times.

According to China’s official press agency Xinhua news agency, the suspect told police, “I was drunk last night and had a fight with unknown people [before the fire]”, reported AFP.

The five injured people are being treated at a hospital. The lounge where the fire broke out had only one corridor for entry and exit, reported CCTV.

In November, 19 people were killed and eight injured when a fire broke out in a house in Beijing’s southern Daxing District. Fires are common in China as safety regulations are often flouted.
