The Delhi Police is starting to become quite notorious for brutality.

The Police Commissioner has openly endorsed brutal violence as an option if it were constitutionally permitted, last year videos and pictures frequently caught the police using violence against protesters and the Delhi Police even detained and denied the rights of journalists. On Saturday, the Delhi Police once again resorted to violence in cracking down on a student protest against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

The students were protesting against the RSS in the aftermath of the suicide of Rohith Vemula, a PhD scholar at the Hyderabad University, who had been expelled from his hostel after clashing with a wing of the BJP.

In video released by the protestors, policemen can be seen brutally hitting unarmed students, sparing not even women. A woman student is seen being slapped by a policeman. Shockingly, along with the policemen, the video also shows some people in plainclothes hitting the students without the policemen batting an eyelid.

Even the media wasn't spared by the policemen allegedly. The Indian Express reported that Rahul, a photojournalist who was at the protest, had his camera broken by the police, despite being identified as a journalist.

"We were stopped at the barricade and policemen asked us to use another road. Suddenly a group of men appeared out of nowhere and started thrashing us mercilessly," NDTV reported quoting a protester.

The police meanwhile has insisted that no force was used against those demonstrating. Other videos have emerged showing the protesters themselves yelling at the police. "No protesters were detained and no force had to be used at all," DCP (Central) Parmaditya told PTI.
