Dipa Karmakar wins gold in Gymnastics World Cup

  • Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar won the gold medal in the vault event of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin, Turkey.
  • The 24-year-old gymnast from Tripura scored 14.150 to clinch the gold.
  • She had also topped the qualifying rounds with a score of 13.400.
  • This is Dipa’s first medal in a World Challenge Cup.
  • She had finished fourth in vault event in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
  • After the Rio Olympics, she suffered a knee ligament injury and has been out injured for 2 years.

Indian lifter Jhilli Dalabehera bags bronze in junior world championships

  • Indian lifter Jhilli Dalabehera bagged the bronze medal at the 2018 IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships at Tashkent.
  • Jhilli Dalabehera lifted 167 kg (75 kg + 92 kg) in the 48 kg category to finish third on the podium.
  • She is the second woman lifter (after Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, in 2013) to win a medal at the Junior World Championships.

Supreme Court upholds Chief Justice of India as ‘Master of Roster’

  • The Supreme Court has reiterated that the Chief Justice of India is the master of the roster.
  • According to the SC, the CJI has the prerogative and authority to allocate cases to different benches of the apex court.
  • The Supreme Court said that the CJI is an individual judge and not the collective of five senior-most judges of the SC.
  • The decision comes in the wake of a plea by former Union law minister Shanti Bhushan challenging the existing roster practice of allocating cases in the apex court by the CJI.

AAI to set up Civil Aviation Research Organisation

  • The state-run Airports Authority of India (AAI) will set up a Civil Aviation Research Organisation (CARO) at Begumpet Airport, Hyderabad. .
  • The aim of the project is to find indigenous solutions to meet the challenges posed by the country’s growing air traffic.
  • The CARO facility will be spread across an area of 27 acres and cater to ANS (Air Navigation Services) and airport or engineering research.
  • AAI has earmarked Rs.1,200 crore as the budget for the CARO project for a period of 12 years for R&D.

NEET, JEE (Mains) to be held twice a year: HRD Ministry

  • The JEE (Main) and NEET exams will now be conducted twice a year, instead of just once, Union Minister of Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar has announced.
  • A student will be allowed to take the exam two times a year and the best score will be taken into consideration.
  • Another proposed change is that the National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct these exams, instead of the CBSE.
  • JEE is for admission to IIT, IIITs, etc., while NEET is for admission to medical colleges.

  • Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has overtaken Warren Buffett as the world’s third-richest person.
  • Zuckerberg is third on the list of the world’s richest, behind Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Microsoft’s Bill Gates.
  • He jumped up to third spot after Facebook shares climbed 2.4%.
  • This is the first time that the three wealthiest people have made their fortunes from technology.
  • 34-year-old Mark Zuckerberg is now worth $81.6 billion.
