Govt sets up high level committee to check mob lynching
- The Union Government constituted a High-Level Committee chaired by the Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba.
- The committee will deliberate on the matter and make recommendations.
- The committee is to submit its recommendations to the Government by August 2018.
Govt cuts minimum yearly deposit for Sukanya Samriddhi account to Rs.250
- The government has slashed the minimum annual deposit requirement for accounts under the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana to Rs.250, from Rs1,000.
- The move is expected to enable more people to take advantage of the girl child savings scheme.
- Up to November 2017, more than 1.26 crore accounts were opened across India, securing an amount of Rs 19,183 crore in total under the scheme.
- The Sukanya Samriddhi scheme was launched in 2015.
Nitin Gadkari launches development projects in MP worth over Rs.5,000 crore
- Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has launched development projects worth over 5,400 crore rupees in the Guna district of Madhya Pradesh.
- Gadkari said that the Centre is fully committed to completing the project in time.
Banks, financial institutions agree to speed up resolution of bad loans
- Banks and Financial Institutions, including SBI and LIC, have signed the inter-creditor agreement (ICA) framework to speed up the resolution of stressed assets which are under the 500-crore rupee bracket.
- The framework is part of the Project Sashakt.
- The framework will deal separately with stressed assets of 500 to 2,000 crores or more.
- As of March 2018, there was close to 3 trillion rupees’ worth of bad loans in the 50 to 500 crore category and 2 trillion rupees’ worth in the under 50 crore ticket size.
Pakistan gets 1st woman chief justice of high court
- Pakistan got its first-ever woman chief justice of a high court.
- Justice Tahira Safdar was named as the Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar.
- Justice Safdar will take charge of her new role following the retirement of incumbent Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Mohammad Noor Muskanzai.
- Justice Tahira Safdar, 61, is the daughter of renowned lawyer Syed Imtiaz Hussain Baqri Hanafi.
First-ever tribal atlas of Odisha released
- CM Naveen Patnaik has released the first tribal atlas of Odisha.
- It is a set of maps and statistics that highlight the tribal demography of the state.
- The atlas is prepared by the SC & ST Research and Training Institute in collaboration with Academy of Tribal Language and Culture.
- The Odisha tribal atlas utilises data from the Census 2011 as well as other relevant statistics.
NITI Aayog signs SoI with Lupin Foundation for Aspirational Districts Programme
- NITI Aayog and Lupin Foundation signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) to collaborate on the Aspirational Districts Programme.
- The programme aims to improve indicators in education, health and nutrition, financial inclusion and skill development, agriculture and water resources, and basic infrastructure in India’s Aspirational Districts.
Fakhar Zaman becomes quickest to score 1,000 ODI runs
- Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman became the quickest player in history to reach 1,000 runs in ODI matches.
- Zaman has broken West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards’ record.
- Zaman reached the 1000 mark in 18 innings, while Vivian Richards achieved the feat in 21 matches.
- Fakhar Zaman recently scored a double century for Pakistan against Zimbabwe, becoming the first Pakistan cricketer to score a double century in an ODI.
