Odisha: Government prepared for cyclone, says Naveen Patnaik
The Odisha government has put 16 districts on high alert, after Indian Meteorological Department officials warned the administration of a possible cyclone in the next few days. On Wednesday morning, the Andaman Sea experienced a deep depression, which was subsequently converted into a cyclone. By October 12, the cyclone is expected hit the Odisha and Andhra coast. Meanwhile Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has assured citizens that the state government was fully prepared to deal with the cyclone and its after-effects.

Haryana: Modi to address election rally in Hooda's stronghold today
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a Bharatiya Janata Party election rally in Rohtak, which is Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's home district. Modi is also expected to address three more rallies in Mahendragarh, Sonipat and Jagadhri. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will address three rallies in the state to counter Modi's presence. Haryana will vote for its next state government on October 15.

Rajasthan: State kept on alert after Pakistan records high polio cases
Following the record number of polio cases in Pakistan since 2001, the Indian government has stepped up its surveillance at key border districts around Rajasthan. Special attention has been given to Jodhpur and Baramer districts because the Thar Link Express train passes through them ferrying passengers between both countries. India's neighbour has so far recorded 202 cases of polio this year, the highest since 2001. India was given a polio-free certificate by the World Health Organisation in February.

Assam: Tea industry faces pressure to raise minimum wage for workers
The tea industry in Assam is braced for some tough negotiations in the next few months, as local labour unions and plantation owners jostle over raising the daily minimum wage. Plantation owners currently pay laborers Rs 94 per day, which is lower than the state minimum wage of Rs 169. Members from the All Adivashi Student Association of Assam on Tuesday demanded that plantation owners raise the daily minimum wage to Rs 330. "The (current) wage agreement of tea workers made after every three years between the Consultative Committee for Planters Association and Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha is illegal, as it is below the state minimum wage of Rs 169,” the AASAA president said.

Tamil Nadu: CISF constable kills three colleagues at Kalpakkam atomic power plant
A head constable of the Central Industrial Security Force on Tuesday shot and killed three colleagues near the Kalpakkam atomic power plant complex in Tamil Nadu. Head constable Vijay Prathap Singh killed Assistant Sub-Inspector Ganesan and head constables Subburaj and Mohansingh at the CISF barracks, 10 km south of the nuclear complex. The reasons behind the recent shooting has not yet been ascertained yet.
