A day after his meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Bharatiya Janata Party MP and actor Shatrughan Sinha on Sunday said that he was still a member of the party. Sinha said that he had met Kumar as the two shared “personal and family relations” with one another. Calling Kumar a “capable” chief minister, the MP added that he did not understand “the ruckus” being created over his meeting with the Janata Dal (United) leader. However, he said that while the BJP was not ignoring him, a few members of the party were working against him. “Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow,” he said. Later, Sinha attended a meeting with Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and JD(U) ally Lalu Prasad Yadav. The meeting between Sinha and Kumar took place on the same day Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a rally in Muzzafarpur to launch the BJP’s campaign for the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
Uttar Pradesh: Two killed in clashes between mob, police
Two people were killed and three others injured during clashes between a mob and Uttar Pradesh police in the Hamirpur district of the state on Sunday. Eyewitnesses to the clash said that the mob hurled brickbats at the Biwanr police station, torched a police vehicle while seizing other some vehicles. This led to the police opening fire on the crowd, which resulted in the casualties. The incident took place after the mob went to the police station to demand the registration of a case against a few youths who allegedly molested a girl on Saturday. The girl later immolated herself. State Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Officials said that the local Superintendent of Police and a police inspector had been placed under suspension following the incidents.
Rajasthan: MoU with Portugal hospital signed for public welfare, Raje says
Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on Sunday said that the Memorandum of Understanding between her government and the Portugal-based hospital where former Indian Premier League chairperson Lalit Modi’s wife was treated was signed keeping the welfare of the public in mind. Raje said that the remarks of the opposition Congress on the matter was not relevant as the government was “more concerned about public welfare”. She further said that the MoU would allow the hospital to provide “research and training”, adding that the institute itself would be for the poor. The MoU with the Lisbon-based hospital was signed around two months after Modi’s wife was treated there. Raje has faced heavy criticism from the opposition for her alleged links to the former IPL chairperson.
Delhi: Anna Hazare holds meeting with Kejriwal
Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare met with his former India Against Corruption colleague and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the national capital on Sunday. Kejriwal briefed Hazare about the work done by the Aam Aadmi Party government in the state and also about the progress on getting the Lokpal Bill passed during the next session of the state assembly. Officials said that Hazare raised the issue of the expulsion of Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan from the AAP, adding that the social activist asked Kejriwal to reconcile with the two Swaraj Abhiyan leaders. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was also present during the nearly 50-minute-long meeting between Hazare and Kejriwal.
Punjab: SAD(A) activists raise pro-Khalistan slogans during Badal speech
Two activists from the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) on Sunday raised pro-Khalistan and anti-government slogans during a speech by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at the Punjabi University in Patiala. Witnesses to incident said that the two men began raising slogans as soon as Badal began his speech towards the end of a function at the University. While the chief minister’s personal security surrounded Badal to protect him, policemen present in the vicinity arrested the SAD(A) workers on the spot. Officials said that two other activists from the outfit were also taken into preventive custody. Later, Badal said that some outfits were attempting to disrupt the peace in the state.
