On Wednesday, Apple launched two models of its new smartphone, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Modelled after the previous iPhone 6 series, they have many new attributes, one of which really stands out: the phones no longer come with a headphone jack, but need AirPods (dangling wireless earbuds, that will cost an additional Rs 15,400).

Made from the same hard white plastic as the old EarPods, the button-less AirPods look a lot like old wired Pods that have had their wires snipped off.

The new earbuds come equipped with an infrared sensor that detects when the user is wearing them, and pair with iPhones using the Lightning connector – a feature enabled by the new Apple-designed wireless chip called the W1.

Users can connect their AirPods to their Apple device by opening the AirPod’s case and tapping connect. However, be warned: AirPods will only work with Apple devices that are running iOS 10, watchOS 3, or macOS Sierra. Apple claims that AirPods will have a five-hour battery life before they need to be returned to their charging case.

Apple AirPods will use Bluetooth wireless technology, which means users can also connect AirPods to non-Apple devices (they will require to be manually paired).

Along with two microphones, Apple has crammed accelerometers inside the AirPod, to detect when the earphones are plugged into a user’s ears. If both AirPods are worn, and the user pulls one out, the music or movie they are listening to pauses – perfect for people looking to make conversation during a morning jog. Pop the AirPod back in, the audio will automatically resume.

The phones will be available for sale in India from October 7 at a starting price of Rs 60,000 for models with storage capacity of 32GB. According to a statement released by Apple, India will be the second country to get the new models. The earbuds will be available for $159.

Social media users felt Apple might have a tin ear for what iPhone customers really need.
