World records were broken on the official Day 1 of the Rio Olympics: Australia's Brittany Elmslie, Bronte Campbell, Emma Mckeon and Cate Campbell etched their name in the record books, clocking 3.30.65 minutes to set a new world record and win gold at the 4 X 100 metres freestyle relay in swimming.
It only takes one mistimed step to pull down the curtains on a player's career though. In gymnastics, the landing is one of the most crucial components – sadly, France's Samir Ait Said snapped his leg, and had to be stretchered off the field. (Warning: it's graphic.)
More records were broken as the day progressed. Hungary's Katinka Hosszu clinched gold in the 400 metre individual medley and set a world record as well.

Rugby finally found its way in the Olympics through its "sevens" version. where only seven players can take the field from each side, versus 15 in the regular version. The Deodoro Stadium provided a brilliant spectacle.
