Getting their Olympics campaign off to a steady start, 4th seeds Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna beat the Australian mixed doubles pair of Samantha Stosur and John Peers 7-5, 6-4 to progress to the quarterfinals.
Although the Indian pair were slow out of the blocks, they managed to serve big and clocked up seven aces along the way, compared to four from the Aussie pair.
With the first set tied at 5-5, Stosur's serve was broken and Bopanna served it out for a hard-fought 7-5 win.
In the second set, with the score tied at 2-2, it was Peers's turn to be broken. Mirza and Bopanna held on to that solitary break to win the second set 6-4 and see the match out.
They will now face Heather Watson and Andy Murray of Great Britain, who defeated Carla Suarez Navarro and David Ferrer of Spain. Murray, of course, is an extraordinary singles player, but he is also playing in the men's singles. And the doubles pedigree of the Indian pair will make it a good quarter-final.
Besides Mirza-Bopanna, the other three seeds are out of the competition, opening up the draw for the Indians.
