Third seed Stanislas Wawrinka is through to the semi-finals of the US Open after beating Rio Olympics silver medallist Juan Martin del Potro in four sets on Thursday. Wawrinka won the match 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 after hitting 10 aces and 53 winners, compared to Del Potro's three and 28 respectively. The Swiss will face sixth seed Japanese Kei Nishikori, who stunned Andy Murray in a five-setter earlier in the day, in the semi-finals. The match lasted over three hours and ended at 1.20 am local time.

Del Potro, ranked No. 142 before the tournament began, has been the sentimental favourite at Flushing Meadows after coming back from a long injury layoff and reaching the final of the Olympics. Even as Wawrinka served for the match at 5-2 up in the fourth set, the New York crowd cheered vociferously for a Del Potro comeback, which the Argentinian acknowledged. However, the 2009 US Open champion could not fight back and lost the game.

The other men's singles semi-final will be played between top seed Novak Djokovic and Gael Monfils, who is seeded 10th in the draw.
