Manchester United suffered back-to-back defeats under new manager Jose Mourinho as they failed to score away at Feyenoord, suffering a 1-0 reversal in their first group stage game of the Europa League.
United, lying third in the Premier League table, appeared much altered as Mourinho made eight changes to the side which lost 1-2 at home to Manchester City last week. The manager had previously confirmed that teenager Marcus Rashford would start against Feyenoord. Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly and David De Gea were the only survivors from Saturday's Manchester derby in the starting line-up – with Wayne Rooney being famously left out.
However, the attack from the visiting team was very flat as the Special One used up all his three substitutions on the stroke of 63 minutes, as Rashford, Anthony Martial and Juan Mata were all taken off, making way for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Memphis Depay and Ashley Young in one fell swoop.
Feyenoord's persistence finally paid off as Nicolai Jorgensen scampered down United's left side. He may have been a inch offside when he received the ball, but he squared to Tonny Vilhena, who drilled the ball past De Gea in goal to send the home crowd into raptures.
The noise inside the De Kuip Stadium in Rotterdam became louder as Giovanni Van Bronckhorst's men held on for a famous victory at home. United's next game is a league fixture away at Watford on Sunday.
