A chancy but entertaining knock from New Zealand's No. 10 Jeetan Patel allowed New Zealand a little bit of breathing space, as they managed to get the past the 200-mark in the first session on Day 3 of the second Test in Kolkata. Patel's 47 came in the same number of balls but India also got the three remaining Kiwi wickets to bowl New Zealand out for 204 and remain firmly in control of the second Test with a lead of 112.

Either side of a very short rain break, Patel chanced his arm and more often than not, it came off. There were uppish drives off the pacers and mishits which just dropped short of fielders, but the Kiwi spinner continued his merry ways. Even Ravindra Jadeja came in for some rough treatment, being hammered for five fours, three of them coming in one over. Jadeja almost got revenge though, he had Patel leg-before-wicket but was ruled to have bowled a no-ball.

However, Ravichandran Ashwin got the breakthrough as Patel went for another big one and skied a catch to Mohammed Shami. The pacer picked up the remaining wickets of BJ Watling and Neil Wagner as New Zealand folded for 204. In the five overs squeezed in before lunch was taken, Shikhar Dhawan received some painful blows on his hand and faced a caught-behind appeal, but mercifully kept his wicket intact as India went into lunch 12/0.

Brief scores:

India 316 and 12/0 lead New Zealand 204 (Jeetan Patel 47, Ross Taylor 35; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 5/48, Mohammed Shami 3/70) by 124 runs
