The Punjab Police on Wednesday arrested a non-resident Indian for allegedly running over marathon runner Fauja Singh with his car earlier this week, The Indian Express reported.

The accident on Monday led to the death of 114-year-old Singh at Beas village in Jalandhar district.

Singh, who was born in the Beas village in 1911 and immigrated to England in 1993, became the world’s oldest marathoner in 2011.

Harvinder Singh Virk, the Jalandhar senior superintendent of police, was quoted as saying that the person accused in the hit-and-run case was 30-year-old Amritpal Singh Dhillon. The resident of Dasupur village in Kartarpur had recently returned from Canada.

The police had found parts of the vehicle’s headlight where the accident took place, which led to Dhillon being identified.

A first information report has been registered against Dhillon under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to rash or negligent driving or riding on a public way and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed his condolences over the demise of Singh.

“Fauja Singh ji was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness,” Modi said on social media. “He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away.”
