Indian power forward Amjyot Singh Gill went a step closer to playing for the premier basketball league in the world after signing the NBA Development League contract, putting himself in contention of qualifying for the D-League.
Amjyot Singh already has the distinction of playing abroad when he, along with teammate Amritpal Singh became the first Indians to play in Japan after signing up for Tokyo Excellence last year, "I'm both nervous and excited. I am motivated with the desire to do whatever it takes to make it to the NBA. Whatever happens, this is an opportunity for me to get exposure and understand the workings of the League," Amjyot Singh was quoted as saying in an ESPN report.
The 24-year-old can go on to be an official D-League player in any of the 22 D-League teams who who ally with their parent franchise in the NBA. If he progresses to that league, Amarjyot Singh is eligible to receive a call-up anytime during the NBA season for 10-day contracts or for a longer spell.
Before setting foot in the US, Amarjyot Singh will be a part of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour finals, which will be held in Abu Dhabi on 27th and 28th October. In the tournament, Amarjyot Singh will represent Japan's Hamamatsu. The NBA D-League season begins on November 11th with 22 teams. After the draft, all teams will only comprise of 10 members on November 10th following a training camp which begins on October 31st.
