Following Bamang Tago’s visa application being rejected by Chinese officials because of domicile issues pertaining to his state of origin – Arunachal Pradesh – the Indian government has approached its Chinese counterpart to intervene and sort out the matter.

Mr. Tago, who in addition to being the manager of the Indian badminton contingent currently playing in the Super Series event, the China Open in Fuzhou, is also the secretary of the state badminton association of Arunachal Pradesh. Following the denial of his visa application, earlier on Thursday, Mr. Tago took up the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs.

Speaking about the steps taken by the Indian government, Mr. Vikas Swarup, spokesman of the MEA, stated, “The matter has been brought to our notice now. The government’s position on differential treatment of Indian passport holders is clear and well known. We have conveyed it to the Chinese side. We expect them to address this issue in the spirit of reciprocity and smooth development of bilateral relations.”

Chinese officials are yet to respond to the MEA’s statement.
