The big story: England stutter in Vizag

England began their innings on a horrible note as they ended the second day of the second Test on 103/5 as the Indian bowlers made merry on a spinning and swinging wicket at Vizag on Friday. India were bowled out for 455 as Virat Kohli top scored with 167 with Jayant Yadav also chipping in with a crucial 35 as the other batsmen kept falling at regular intervals.

Mohammed Shami bowled Alastair Cook on 2 as England began in a disastrous fashion. Haseeb Hameed also fell on 13 as the spinners came to the fore. Joe Root was top scored with 53 before falling to Ravichandran Ashwin as England ended the day on 103/5 with Ben Stokes and Jonny Baristow at the crease.

  1.  England pacer Stuart Broad will have a scan on his right foot after complaining of more pain during the second day’s play of the second Test against India. Broad had left the field on the first day complaining of discomfort in both his wrist and foot.       
  2. New Zealand gained the upper-hand as Pakistan were bowled out for 133 in the first Test at Christchurch. Kiwi all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme got his Test career off to a splendid start with a six-wicket haul on debut.
  3. Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene on Friday was announced as the new head coach for Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians. The 39-year-old will replace former Australian captain Ricky Ponting who coached the team in the last two seasons. 
  4. The India women’s cricket team lost to West Indies in the first Twenty20 International at Vijayawada on Friday. This was West Indies’ first win in the series after the 3-0 whitewash in the One-Day Internationals. India made 150 in their allotted 20 overs with West Indies chasing down the target with five balls to spare.
  5. Zimbabwe face West Indies in the third match of tri-series on Saturday with the latter looking for their second consecutive win after beating Sri Lanka. Zimbabwe, however, will look to make amends after their loss against Sri Lanka in the first match. 
  6. South Africa’s stand-in skipper Faf du Plessis faces a one Test suspension after being charged by the International Cricket Council on Friday over an alleged ball-tampering offence. Television footage showed Plessis chewing mint and then using his saliva to shine the ball during Australia’s second innings in the second Test in Hobart.
