Jo-Wilfried Tsonga capped off yet another successful week with a title run at the Marseille Open on Sunday, defeating countryman Lucas Pouille in the final, 6-4, 6-4.
The 31-year-old, who faced no break points on his serve, in turn secured a service break on Pouille’s serve in each set before clinching the win in 69 minutes. This was Tsonga’s third title at Marseille, the previous two came in 2009 and 2013. En route to victory, Tsonga had defeated the (then) defending champion Nick Kyrgios in the semi-finals.
It was Tsonga’s ninth straight match win and second consecutive title after he won the Rotterdam Open beating David Goffin last week. Following his win, Tsonga moved up four places, to re-enter the top-10, at the seventh spot of the ATP ranking.
In the men’s doubles, the top-seeded French team of Nicolas Mahut and Julien Benneteau emerged as champions. Mahut and Benneteau defeated the unseeded Dutch-British pair of Robin Haase and Dominic Inglot, 6-4, 6-7, 10-5.
