England beat Lithuania 2-0 in their World Cup qualification match in Group F at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday. It was England manager Gareth Southgate’s first game at Wembley and his side clearly had the advantage as they faced a side ranked 107th in the FIFA rankings. Lithuania seemed stunned with the occasion and had a nervy start.

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe struck for England in the 21st minute as they went 1-0 up. The first-half ended with England having their nose ahead with their defence not really tested by the Lithuanian strikers. In the second-half, substitute Jamie Vardy came on to score and double the lead for England.

Germany prove their pedigree

Germany proved their champion pedigree as they beat Azerbaijan 4-1 in their World Cup qualifier in Group C at Baku. Andre Schurrle, making his first start for Germany since October 2015, opened the scoring. He then assisted Thomas Muller, who netted the ball to make it 2-1.

Mario Gomez struck just before half-time to make it 3-1 as Azerbaijan’s Dimitrij Nazarov pulled one back. However, Schurrle made it 4-1, netting his second for the night.
