According to a report published in the CNN, former National Football League player Aaron Hernandez, who had been serving a life sentence for murder in the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Massachusetts, committed suicide on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old’s body was found hanging from the window of his cell by the prison authorities, who also went on to release an official statement to the media. The statement noted, “Lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez, and he was transported to UMass Leominster, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 AM. [Hernandez] attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.”

Hernandez was a part of the New England Patriots squad in their offensive lineup as a tight end from 2010 until 2013, when following his arrest for murder of Odin Lloyd, the team released him from his contract. Following a two-year trial, Hernandez was eventually convicted with a life sentence and had since been incarcerated.

On April 14 2017, Hernandez was cleared of double homicide charges levelled against him for a shooting incident that had occurred outside a pub in Boston in 2012. Aside of these brushes with the American legal system, Hernandez had also had several other infractions with the law.
