Indian boxer Satish Kumar (+91kg) lost his quarter-final bout against Kazakhstan’s Kamshybek Kunkabayev in a unanimous verdict in the Asian Boxing Championships on Wednesday. Kumar had bagged silver in the previous edition of the tournament.

Along with him, Manish Panwar (81kg) also lost to Turkmanistan’s Nuryagdy Nuryadyyev.

However, the dup can still book a berth for the World Championships in Germany in August. Both of them will fight in box-offs on Saturday. Kumar will be up against China’s Mu Haipeng as Panwar will take on Pakistan’s Awais Ali Khan for a World Championship berth.

Bowing out in the quarter-finals yesterday were also Manoj Kumar (69kg) and Kavinder Singh Bisht (49kg). In the morning session, Gaurav Bidhuri (56kg) had lost his quarter-final bout.

Manoj will face China’s Wei Liu in his box-off bout.

Earlier, top seed Vikas Krishan (75kg) and fourth seed Shiva Thapa (60kg) were among the four Indian boxers assured of both medals and World Championship berths after they made the semi-finals.

Sumit Sangwan (91kg) and Amit Phangal (49kg) were the other two Indian boxers to book medals as well as World Championship slots.

Women’s trio recommended for Arjuna

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has recommended the names of World Champions Saweety Boora (81kg), Sonia Lather (57kg), and Sarjubala Devi (51kg) for this year’s Arjuna awards. Boora and Devi bagged the silver medal during the 2014 World Championship. Lather was India’s lone medalist at the 2016 edition where she bagged silver as well. The trio has bagged silver medals at the Asian Championships as well.
