The eighth day of action at the US Open on Monday ended on a disappointing note for the Indian contingent with more defeats dotting the results than wins.

Rohan Bopanna crashed out of mixed doubles in the pre-quarterfinals with partner Gabriela Dabrowski. In the junior girls singles, both Mahak Jain and Mihika Yadav lost their opening-round games. The only consolation of the day came from Siddhant Banthia who advanced to the second round of the junior boys’ doubles.

Here’s a quick recap:

Vexing end in mixed doubles for Bopanna

The reigning French Open mixed doubles champions Bopanna and Dabrowski were ousted in the third round by the third-seeded pair of Michael Venus and Hao-Ching Chan 4-6, 6-3, (10-8).

To start the match, the seventh seeded Indo-Canadian pair took the opening set in 28 minutes. However, it didn’t take long for the momentum to coast towards their higher-ranked opponents, who secured two service breaks to level the match at a set-all.

In the deciding tie-break, the third seeds quickly built a 8-2 lead before Bopanna and Dabrowski got back to reduce the points’ deficit. But despite losing three of the four match points they had in the match tie-break, Venus and Chan went on to make good use of their final match point to take the win.

Juniors stumble

It was a tough outing for Jain and Yadav in their respective first-round matches as both lost out in three sets. Sixth seed Xin Yu Wang of China defeated Jain 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1, while unseeded American Nikki Redelijk put paid to Yadav’s dreams 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Despite their individual singles run ending in the first round itself, Jain and Yadav will be playing together in the junior girls’ doubles. They will play the unseeded Colombian-Burundian team of Munera Sanchez and Sada Nahimana in the first round on Tuesday.

Banthia provides consolation

Banthia came through in his opening round of the junior boys’ doubles along with Japanese partner Shinji Hazawa. The duo beat the American team of Lukas Greif and Govind Nanda 3-6, 6-3, (11-9) to reach the second round.

The Dutch team of Jesper De Jong and Ryan Nijboer will be their opponents in the next round.
