The National Sports Club of India in Worli, Mumbai was jam-packed on Saturday, November 4. It was not for a competitive event. It was to witness a plethora of badminton legends – past and present – show off their skills in a rare setting.
Where else would you be able to watch Peter Gade and P Gopichand play against each other – a rematch of the All England semi-final in 2001 – after all these years? Where else would one catch PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal team up against Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei? And Srikanth Kidambi taking on Taufiq Hidayat in a doubles match? The crowd was treated to some rare matchups, even if it was short-lived it and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Sindhu, especially, was treated to rapturous applause every time she came out to play.
And of course, Sachin Tendulkar was present at a sporting event in Mumbai, so there had to “Sachin, Sachin!” chants as well.
