A gutless performance from Manchester United at home to Sevilla led them to being knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16 on Tuesday. Substitute Wissam Ben Yedder scored twice as Sevilla stunned Manchester United 2-1 in the second leg of the last-16 tie at Old Trafford to advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Following a goalless first leg in Spain, Ben Yedder struck on 74 and 78 minutes in Manchester before Romelu Lukaku grabbed a consolation for Jose Mourinho’s under-par side. United did not attack until they had conceded the lead in the tie and by then it was too late.
"An absolute calamity for Manchester United. One of the worst nights in their European history..."

Sevilla reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League/European Cup for the first time in SIXTY YEARS.

Last time they got this far, they lost 10-2 on aggregate to Real Madrid.
(To be fair, that was the Real Madrid of Di Stefano, Gento, Santamaria, etc.)
After the final whistle, pundits and journalists opened fire at Mourinho’s tactics, which now have left United fighting for just the FA Cup and a top-four finish in the Premier League.
If you don’t turn up with the right attitude and don’t apply yourself then you will get beat - don’t care what you have done or how good you have been before @ChampionsLeague

@ManUtd forward line should be scary to play against....the team ain’t set up at times to get the best out of them. Lukaku often isolated, wide men defending deep, team sits deep....in glimpses they scare

"I still think this Manchester United side need three or four world-class players."

"They need to spend more."
Nearly £300m spent on players under José Mourinho and Steven Gerrard thinks they're still lacking quality. pic.twitter.com/NMVYXaIF4t
Bizarre display from Man Utd. Boss has to take blame for cautious confused approach. Nzonzi-inspired Sevilla were better side.

Mourinho at United is a waste of everyone's time.

Mourinho will win you trophies in the short term but it’ll be at the expense of your playing style long term. That’s not me talking, that’s Real Madrid, Chelsea (twice) and probably Manchester United now as well.
— Chris Williams (@Chris78Williams) March 14, 2018
It took Manchester United 174 minutes to actually go and attack Sevilla. The players looked so lost out there and just so timid. No one willing to take responsibility and go forward. So backwards.

However, it was this particular quote from Mourinho in the post-match press conference that really got people on social media either riled up or led them to burst out laughing depending on their loyalties.
Mourinho: “I sat in this chair with Porto - Man Utd out. I sat in this chair with Real Madrid - Man Utd out. It's not something new for this club." #mufc pic.twitter.com/Awc0aEsUuP
— United Xtra (@utdxtra) March 13, 2018
Yes, Mourinho actually trashed his own club.

Romelu Lukaku, one of the very few Man United players who could hold their heads high after the match, said it like it should have been said:
Lukaku: “Some players were hiding. We should have done much better. We didn’t deserve it. We weren’t good enough.”
— United Xtra (@utdxtra) March 13, 2018
Fair play to Rom for coming out and talking honestly to the media. #mufc [BT] pic.twitter.com/aZbmc0a6ra
Then came the jokes and digs.
Man Utd have played just six Champions League knockout games since Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of 2012/13.

Might have been a good idea to try and score it.
21 - Sevilla attempted 21 shots tonight; the most that Manchester United have allowed an opposition side at Old Trafford in a competitive match since Real Madrid attempted 22 in March 2013 (Champions League). Peppered. pic.twitter.com/34D4VYb62A
