Andre Agassi has decided to end his coaching tenure with Novak Djokovic, ESPN reported on Saturday.
“With only the best of intentions I tried to help Novak. We far too often found ourselves agreeing to disagree. I wish him only the best moving forward,” express.co.uk quoted Agassi’s statement to ESPN.
Djokovic is yet to issue a statement on the split.
Agassi had joined Djokovic’s team after the Rome Masters last May to help the Serb recover his lost form. But the Serb lost his French Open title after losing in the quarter-finals to Dominic Thiem.
Then, in the prelude to Wimbledon, he won the Aegon International in Eastbourne (the only title he won after joining Agassi) But the Serb pulled out from the Wimbledon quarter-final with an elbow injury and skipped the rest of the year to recover from it.
After returning this year, Djokovic showed glimpses of his old self at the Australian Open but lost a gripping fourth round clash to Hyeon Chung. The Serb’s been title-less so far this year and his recent defeat came against Benoit Paire in a round of 64 match at the Miami Open.
“That’s one of the things I felt like I needed is new inspiration, someone that knows exactly what I’m going through, you know, on the court, off the court,” Djokovic had said when the collaboration with Agassi was announced. “He has been through all these transitions, he has been in my shoes before playing Grand Slams, being the best in the world, and facing all the challenges that are present in professional sport.”
