Earlier, the women’s volleyball team missed out on a chance to clinch their first win in Pool B, losing a thriller against Taipei.

08:24 pm: Meanwhile, the hockey match ended 4-1 in India’s favour as the women’s team put in a fine display. India win three out of three and stay on top of Pool B. After being 1-1 in the first three quarters, the Indians managed to score thrice in the decisive final quarter.

NO MEDAL FROM WOMEN’S HAMMER THROW FOR INDIA: Sarita finishes with a best of 62.03m, after a foul in her 6th attempt as well. Bronze eventually goes to Japan, with a 62.90 m. Her PB would have fetched Sarita a bronze here but it’s a creditable 5th place finish. The first and second place goes to China, with a massive lead over the rest of the pack.

Oh dear. Saurav Ghosal has lost in the men’s singles semifinal after having the early lead. He was the top seed at the Games. And this is a definite upset. Of course, we couldn’t know what went wrong without any telecast from the squash courts.

All the stats from that heartbreaking defeat for Manu and Sumeeth. 3 match points! A win here would have seen them have a great chance of ensuring a doubles medal as they would have faced a lower-ranked pair from Sri Lanka in the quarterfinal.

So close!!! Manu and Sumeeth had three match points against the world No 2 pair from China, Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen, but squander them to lose 13-21, 21-17, 23-25. The Indians were leading 20-18 in the decider! So unfortunate that this match was not on any of the two TV courts and no one outside the arena could watch it!

3.40 pm: Weightlifting

Iran’s Sohrab Moradi broke weightlifting’s longest standing world record on his way to gold in the men’s 94kg category. Moradi lifted 189 kg in snatch to better the 188-kg record set in 1999 by Greece’s Akakios Kakiasvilis.

Moradi now has a complete set of world records. He already owned the records for the clean and jerk (233 kg) and total weight (417 kg) in the men’s light heavyweight division. Full report here.

3.35 pm: A Unified Korea team featuring athletes from North and South Korea won the bronze in dragon boat for their first medal at the Asian Games, reported AFP. The highly symbolic all-Korean team, competing together after a rapid improvement in cross-border relations, came in behind China and Indonesia in Palembang.

There were two Indian semi-finalists in the women’s singles but none of them manage to make it to the summit clash as Joshna Chinappa also loses her match to Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam. The Malaysian won by three sets to one. Nonetheless, it’s a bronze for Joshna.

Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy have lost their quarter-final against world No 3 pair of Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan 21-11, 24-22.

2.42 pm: Weightlifting

Vikas Thakur ends up eighth out of 10 lifters in the men’s 94 kg category with a total lift of 335 kg. Iran’s Sohrab Moradi wins the gold with 410 kg.

2.38 pm: Boxing

India’s Pavitra wins her women’s 60 kg category round of 16 bout against Pakistan’s Perveen Rukhsana after hammering her opponent in the first round. The referee stopped the contest in the first round itself to award the match to the Indian. She moves on to the quarters.

India stand ninth in the women’s team classification after three rounds, with a score of four-over. China tops the table with 19-under.

2.30 pm: Canoe

The Indian women’s TBR team ends up 9th with a time of 1:00.116 in the tail race final, which is not a medal race. China gets the gold with 56.161 in the grand final.

The Indian men’s team ends up a disappointing 11th and last with a time of 57.397 in the tail race.

The Indian women’s team beats Malaysia 54-19 in the 9th-10th-place classification match.

It’s a bronze medal for Dipika Pallikal Karthik as she loses to top seed Nicol David in straight sets in the semi-finals of the women’s singles.

An easy win for Sindhu in the end, against Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. Sindhu wins 21-12, 21-15 to move into the quarter-finals.

Vikas Thakur attempts to lift 197 kg directly after 190 kg but fails to do so. It’s all but certain that India won’t be winning any medal here.

World junior champ Gregoria Mariska Tunjung looks completely off-colour in her round of 16 match against PV Sindhu. The world No 3 has comfortably won the first game 21-12.

Vikas Thakur successfully lifts 190 kg in his first clean and jerk attempt.

Atanu Das starts off the third set with a 10 but Viswash follows that up with a 6. Viswash makes up for it with a 10 on his second shot, while Jagdish also scores a 10 to take India’s score to 54. However, the Koreans score 56 to seal the match 5-1. This means the Indians are out of the men’s recurve team event.

India lose the second set 54-56 after despite shooting two 10s. One shot of 7 cost the Indians. Korea lead 3-1 going into the third set.

It’s a set that is split 1-1 but India would rue that. Needed a 9 from Atanu to win the set, he shot an 8! That was a golden chance to take the lead against the top seeds.

Promila Daimari shoots a 7 and a 6 in the fourth set and that means India end up with just 47. Chinese Taipei score 57 to take the fourth set and the match. Chinese Taipei win 6-2 to progress to the semi-finals. India are out.

India get one back, taking the third set 54-52 as Chinese Taipei shoot two eights in six shots. Chinese Taipei’s lead has been reduced to 4-2. Can India draw level in the fourth set?

The Indian women’s recurve team lose the second set to Chinese Taipei as well, this time 51-56, with as many as four 8s in six shots. Chinese Taipei lead by four set points to India’s zero.

The Indian women’s recurve team drops the first set of their quarter-final by just one point as Chinese Taipei score 56 to India’s 55. Ankita Bhakat hit an 8 in the second series, which turned out to be decisive.

Saina Nehwal needs just over 30 minutes to get past Fitriani 21-6, 21-14 and enter the quarter-finals.

India’s Varun Ashok Thakkar and Ganapathy Kelapanda are second in the overall fleet after three races of the 49er men, while Varsha Gautham and Sweta Shervegar are third after three races of the 49er FX women.

Nethra Kumanan is on top after three races of the laser redial for women, while Harshita Tomar is third in the open laser 4.7.

Fitriani starts off the second game well, even taking a 7-3 lead. However, Saina is in no mood to relent as she steps it up and takes a 11-9 lead into the interval.

Rashmi Rathore and Ganemat Sekhon are level on 68 points, currently occupying the 9th and 10th spots after the first three rounds of the women’s skeet qualifications.

Saina Nehwal completely dominates Fitriani in the first game, winning it 21-6 in less than 15 minutes. The Indonesian crowd, which was quite loud at the beginning of the match, has quietened down a bit.

Saina Nehwal leads 11-5 at the break of the first game. Fitriani committed three back-to-back service errors at the start and that seems to have affected her game as she looks quite zoned out right now. Saina not looking to waste any time.

Both Indians have failed to qualify for the six-shooter final. Anish Bhanwala finished 9th with 576 points while Shivam Shukla was 11th with 569.

Chethan Balasubramanya is through to the final after successfully clearing 2.15m in his second attempt. He came fifth in his group but that was good enough for him to make the cut.

India’s Arokia Rajiv comes second in his heat with a timing of 46.82, which is good enough to take him to the semi-finals. This means both of India’s runners – Anas and Arokia – have made it to the semis.

The Indian women’s recurve team, comprising Deepika Kumari, Promila Daimari and Ankita Bhakat, has beaten Mongolia 5-3 in the round of 16.

8.50 am: The men’s decathlon has started in Jakarta, but India unfortunately has no competitors. The last time the Asian Games were held in Jakarta, an Indian had won the gold in decathlon. Here’s the story of Gurbachan Singh Randhawa, who was also declared the best Asian athlete at the 1962 Games.

8.43 am: Men’s marathon

Japan’s Hiroto Inoue, who won the men’s marathon, was accused of pushing his rival in a controversial sprint finish on Saturday, reported AFP. Bahrain’s Elhassan Elabbassi, who ended up second, lodged a complaint with race officials.

Inoue and Elabbassi entered the stadium in Jakarta neck and neck, before the Japanese athlete opened up a small lead. In the final 100 metres, Elabbassi attempted to overtake Inoue on the inside but fell back after apparent contact. “The number one [leader] pushed me,” said Elabbassi. “I would have won.”

You must have already heard about K Srikanth and HS Prannoy’s early exits on Friday. Sorry for reminding you. But those were not the only upsets on the badminton courts. Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie stunned the top seed Shi Yuq in front of a raucous home crowd, winning 21-19, 19-21, 21-17 after over an hour.

7.30 am: Swimming

ICYMI, Japan’s Rikako Ikee on Friday won a record sixth Asian Games swimming title, by winning the women’s 50m freestyle by a fingertip from China’s Liu Xiang. Ikee’s timing of 24.53 seconds was good enough to make her the first woman in any sport to bag six gold medals at a single Games, reported AFP. She had earlier won the gold in the 50m fly, 100m fly, 100m free, 4x100m free and the 4x100m medley.

Meanwhile’s China’s swimming star Sun Yang won the men’s 1,500m event to finish with four individual freestyle titles in Jakarta. Japan and China both have won as many as 19 swimming gold medals each in Jakarta. Phenomenal.

The qualification round has begun and India’s Rashmi Rathore currently stands fourth after the first series, in which she shot 24 targets out of 25. Three shooters got a perfect score above her. However, three other shooters have not yet had their first shot, including India’s Sekhon Ganemat.

Athletics kicks off on Saturday and under-20 world champion Hima Das will be competing in the 400 metres alongside Nirmala Sheoran. Quarter-miler Muhammad Anas and long jumper Sreeshankar Murali will be in contention as well.

Sourav Ghosal, Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Joshna Chinappa will be aiming to make it to the finals of the squash competition. The three have already assured themselves of a bronze medal by making it to the semis, but will want to progress further.

Teenage sensation Anish Bhanwala will also be in action in the 25 metre rapid fire pistol shooting event. PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal will return to the badminton courts for their second round matches.
