NO MEDAL FROM WOMEN’S HAMMER THROW FOR INDIA: Sarita finishes with a best of 62.03m, after a foul in her 6th attempt as well. Bronze eventually goes to Japan, with a 62.90 m. Her PB would have fetched Sarita a bronze here but it’s a creditable 5th place finish. The first and second place goes to China, with a massive lead over the rest of the pack.

05:54 pm: Athletics

Sarita fouls her fifth throw. She has one throw left to ensure a medal, currently lying in 4th. Watanabe has finished all her attempts. Sarita needs to better 62.45m.

05:50 pm: BADMINTON

So India’s hopes of a badminton medal now lie with Saina and Sindhu. It ever was thus. Reminder that India have never won a singles medal at the Asian Games before! Both Sindhu and Saina are one win away from changing that. Sindhu will face Jindapol in the quarterfinal while Saina will face the winner of Ratchanok Intanon vs Sung Ji Hyun (match in progress)

05:42 PM: ATHLETICS

05:40 pm: ATHLETICS

Arka Bhattacharya chips in with this tidbit on Sreeshankar, who looked impressive in his first jump of 7.83m (Personal Best: 7.99m)

“It’s an important competition for Sreeshankar. Has the capability to join the triumvirate of Neeraj, Tejaswin, Hima but needs to be managed well. Still, his 1st major senior competition, previous experience being the world juniors. Keep an eye out for this guy!”

05:37 pm: SQUASH

The coverage of squash from the Asian Games perspective has been a travesty, really. Without telecast and the site not showing scores, we only now have confirmation of all the results involving India.

David Nicol Ann [1] - Dipika Pallikal [3/4] 11-7 11-9 11-6, 32 mins
Sivasangari Subramaniam [5/8]- Joshna Chinappa [3/4] 12-10 11-6 9-11 11-7, 41 mins

05:12 pm: SQUASH

With Saurav Ghosal’s defeat, India’s campaign in the singles squash ends. Three bronze medals feels underwhelming. Ghosal, the top seed, had won silver in Incheon. He lost to the World no 21 Au Chun Ming Leo from Hong Kong.

05:09 pm: ATHLETICS

The evening session of athletics is now underway. Sarita Romit Singh is in action in the Women’s Hammer Throw. She manages a 59.90 m throw in her 1st attempt. We’ll keep you posted.

05:02 pm: SQUASH - BRONZE MEDAL ALERT

Oh dear. Saurav Ghosal has lost in the men’s singles semifinal after having the early lead. He was the top seed at the Games. And this is a definite upset. Of course, we couldn’t know what went wrong without any telecast from the squash courts.

4:54 PM: BADMINTON

All the stats from that heartbreaking defeat for Manu and Sumeeth. 3 match points! A win here would have seen them have a great chance of ensuring a doubles medal as they would have faced a lower-ranked pair from Sri Lanka in the quarterfinal.

4.44 pm: Badminton

So close!!! Manu and Sumeeth had three match points against the world No 2 pair from China, Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen, but squander them to lose 13-21, 21-17, 23-25. Vikas Thakur can’t lift 197 kg again in this third and final clean and jerk attempt, which means he ends up with a total score of 335, which is the fourth best so far. But a lot of the other lifters are still to come so expect that placement to fall. No medal for India.

1.58 pm: Weightlifting

Vikas Thakur attempts to lift 197 kg directly after 190 kg but fails to do so. It’s all but certain that India won’t be winning any medal here.

1.01 pm: Weightlifting

Vikas misses his first two attempts of lifting 145 kg but manages it in the final snatch attempt to (just about) stay alive in this event. Don’t expect anything from here though, as his planned first attempts are way below some of the other contestants.
