IPL 2020, CSK vs SRH as it happened: Dhoni takes it to the end but Sunrisers clinch 7-run win
Here are highlights of match No 14 of the 2020 Indian Premier League.
11.35 pm: MS Dhoni – “I’m fine physically. The weather here quite dry so the throat can get dry too. I think I tried to hit the ball too hard and didn’t connect well. We need to be more professional: take catches and not bowl no-balls. Overall we could’ve been slightly better. At this level, you have to draw a line and say these catches have to be taken. Plenty of positives in this game, I think we’ll come back strong.”
11.32 pm: Curran hits the last ball for six but SRH bag the win. CSK finish with 157/5, Dhoni remains not-out on 47 off 36.
SRH WIN BY 7 RUNS!
19.5: Another single. This is brilliant from Samad. CSK need 14 off 1.
19.4: Just a single again. That should do it for SRH. CSK need 15 off 2.
19.3: Just a single. Dhoni is furious with himself. Curran on strike now. CSK need 16 off 3.
19.2: Four! Dhoni bludgeons it straight back. That went like a rocket! CSK need 17 off 4.
19.2: Dhoni hits it down the ground and they run two. He’s struggling physically but fighting hard. CSK need 21 off 5.
19.1: Four wides! Nerves from young Samad. CSK get five runs. They need 23 off 6 now.
After 19 overs, CSK are 137/5 (Dhoni 39, Curran 8)
Khaleel Ahmed completes that Bhuvi over. Dhoni runs a couple of twos and pulls a muscle, he gets some treatment and then whacks one for six. Final six balls coming up, CSK need 28 runs to win. Young Abdul Samad will bowl, Dhoni is on strike.
Nope, that’s it for Bhuvi. He tosses the ball away and is walking off. This is a blow to SRH and Indian cricket. The right-arm pacer was making a comeback from injury in this tournament. So sad to see, hope it isn’t serious.
After 18.1 overs, CSK are 122/5 (Dhoni 24, Curran 8)
Oh dear, Bhuvneshwar Kumar seems to have pulled his groin. He looks in pain but gets some treatment and will finish his over. CSK need 43 off 11.
After 18 overs, CSK are 121/5 (Dhoni 24, Curran 7)
SIX! Huge strike from Sam Curran first up. CSK get 19 runs from that Natarajan over, they need 44 off 12.
After 17.4 overs, CSK are 114/5 – Jadeja is gone!
Fifty and out! Jadeja completes his half-century but is dismissed the next ball by Natarajan. Dhoni is still at the crease. CSK need 51 off 14 balls. Sam Curran is the new batsman.
After 17 overs, CSK are 102/4 (Dhoni 24, Jadeja 38)
Jadeja hits the first three balls of the over for four but Bhuvi does well to concede just three runs in the remaining deliveries. CSK need 63 off 18.
After 16 overs, CSK are 87/4 (Dhoni 24, Jadeja 23)
Rashid Khan finishes with figures of 0/12. Simply superb from the Afghan leg-spinner. CSK need 78 off 24.
After 15 overs, CSK are 79/4 (Dhoni 17, Jadeja 23)
Jadeja gets a six off Samad but Dhoni gets just a single off the last three balls. CSK need 86 off 30.
After 14 overs, CSK are 71/4 (Dhoni 16, Jadeja 16)
Jadeja gets a boundary off Natarajan and CSK get 10 runs from the over but they need more. 94 off 36 needed. Time for a strategic timeout.
After 13 overs, CSK are 61/4 (Dhoni 15, Jadeja 8)
Khaleel Ahmed returns to the attack and concedes just three singles. This is bizarre from CSK, hardly any intent from them. They need 104 off 42.
After 12 overs, CSK are 58/4 (Dhoni 14, Jadeja 6)
Another fine over from Rashid Khan, just three runs from it. CSK need 107 off 48. They need to up the ante right about now.
After 11 overs, CSK are 55/4 (Dhoni 13, Jadeja 4)
Better from CSK as Dhoni hits Samad for a powerful four straight back. 11 runs came from that over. 110 off 54.
After 10 overs, CSK are 44/4 (Dhoni 4, Jadeja 2)
Another stunning over from Rashid. He has bowled 12 balls so far and 10 of those have been dots. Wow!
After 9 overs, CSK are 43/4 (Dhoni 4, Jadeja 1)
A successful first over by young Abdul Samad, a wicket and just two runs from it. CSK need Dhoni and Jadeja to get a big partnership here.
After 8.2 overs, CSK are 42/4 – Kedar is gone!
OUT! Kedar Jadhav hits it straight to David Warner at covers and Abdul Samad gets the wicket. Kedar’s poor form continues, he departs for 3 off 10. CSK in trouble.
After 8 overs, CSK are 41/3 (Kedar 3, Dhoni 3)
What a first over from Rashid Khan, just a single from it. Four dot balls in a row to Kedar Jadhav to end the over. SRH are putting in the choke. CSK need 124 off 72.
After 7 overs, CSK are 40/3 (Kedar 3, Dhoni 2)
Abhishek Sharma joins the attack. Good first over from the young left-arm spinner, just four singles from it.
After 6 overs, CSK are 36/3 – Faf is gone!
OUT! Two wickets in one over as CSK lose the man in form Faf du Plessis. The South African was looking good once again but is run-out for 22 off 19! SRH on top in Dubai! Dhoni joins Kedar at the crease.
After 5.1 overs, CSK are 26/2 – Rayudu is gone!
OUT! T Natarajan gets the big wicket of Ambati Rayudu! That was a peach of a delivery, completely deceived Rayudu to rattle the stumps.
After 5 overs, CSK are 26/1 (Du Plessis 14, Rayudu 8)
Big over for CSK, 13 runs from it. Faf du Plessis decides to attack and hits Khaleel Ahmed for two fours. Final over of the powerplay coming up.
After 4 overs, CSK are 13/1 (Du Plessis 3, Rayudu 7)
Four! T Natarajan bowls a low full-toss on the pads and Ambati Rayudu whips it past square-leg for four. CSK need the scoreboard to keep ticking.
After 3 overs, CSK are 7/1 (Du Plessis 3, Rayudu 2)
The end of a superb over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, a wicket and just three runs from it. Ambati Rayudu has joined Faf du Plessis at the crease. CSK are under pressure.
After 2.3 overs, CSK are 4/1 – Watson is gone!
Sensational bowling from Bhuvi! Swings the ball back into the right-hander and Watson chops it onto the stumps. It’s all SRH at the moment!
After 2 overs, CSK are 4/0 (Du Plessis 2, Watson 1)
Another good over for SRH, this time Khaleel Ahmed gets good shape into the right-handers and concedes just three runs in his first over.
After 1 over, CSK are 1/0 (Du Plessis 1, Watson 0)
Fantastic start from Bhuvneshwar Kumar! Gets the ball to swing both ways and concedes just a run in the first over. New opening pair for CSK as Faf du Plessis joins Shane Watson.
9.28 pm: Sunrisers Hyderabad have recovered well to post a decent total. Can Chennai Super Kings chase this down. We’re ready for the second innings in Dubai!
SRH FINISH WITH 164/5
Fine last over from Shardul Thakur, just seven runs from it. Priyam Garg remains not-out on 51 off 26.
After 19 overs, SRH are 157/5 (Garg 50, Samad 3)
FIFTY for Priyam Garg! Brilliant knock from the 19-year-old right-hander. He gets to his first IPL half-century in just 23 balls. 11 runs from that Dwayne Bravo over, he finishes with figures of 0/28 in his comeback match.
After 18 overs, SRH are 146/5 – Abhishek is gone!
OUT! TWO catches dropped from CSK in that over, one from Jadeja (yes, you read that right) and the second one from Shardul. And both times it was Abhishek who survived. But Deepak Chahar finally gets his man as Dhoni holds on to the edge. The young left-hander departs for a fine 31 off 24. Chahar finishes with figures of 2/31.
After 17 overs, SRH are 133/4 (Garg 35, Abhishek 26)
1, 2, 4, N4, 6, 4, 0 – massive over for SRH as Priyam Garg takes Sam Curran for 22 runs. Brilliant batting from the two young guns of SRH! Garg and Abhishek Sharma have added 64 runs for the 5th wicket.
After 16 overs, SRH are 111/4 (Garg 15, Abhishek 25)
Shot! Shardul bangs it in and Priyam pulls it with ease for four. The youngsters have added 42 runs for the 5th wicket.
Brilliance from Faf at the rope:
After 15 overs, SRH are 100/4 (Garg 7, Abhishek 23)
Shot! Bravo pitches it right up and Abhishek drives it confidently over mid-off for four. SRH would want to get close to 150.
After 14 overs, SRH are 91/4 (Garg 5, Abhishek 17)
A four and a six! Impressive batting by Abhishek Sharma as he takes on Ravindra Jadeja. The left-hander is striking the ball well.
After 13 overs, SRH are 77/4 (Garg 2, Abhishek 6)
Sunrisers have two young guns in Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma at the crease now, and they have a huge task on their hands. Ravindra Jadeja and Piyush Chawla slip in a quiet over each.
After 11 overs, SRH are 69/4 – Warner and Williamson are gone!
Two wickets in two balls for CSK! First Warner (28 off 29) hits it to long-on and Faf does a wonderful act at the rope to complete the catch. Then off the next ball, Williamson (9 off 13) has a mix-up with young Priyam Garg and is run-out. Sharp fielding by Rayudu and Dhoni. SRH are in trouble!
After 10 overs, SRH are 63/2 (Warner 23, Williamson 8)
Another fine over by Dwayne Bravo, just three runs from it. He’s slipping in those slower-balls wonderfully.
After 9 overs, SRH are 60/2 (Warner 21, Williamson 7)
A superb reverse-sweep by David Warner for four. Piyush Chawla joins the attack and concedes eight runs in his first over. Not much turn for the leggie.
After 8 overs, SRH are 52/2 (Warner 15, Williamson 5)
Kane Williamson is off the mark with a gorgeous drive past covers for four. That was all class. But a successful over by Shardul Thakur, a wicket and just five runs from it.
After 7.1 overs, SRH are 47/2 – Pandey is gone!
OUT! Big wicket for CSK as Shardul Thakur removes Manish Pandey. The right-hander was looking impressive but he hits it straight to mid-off and has to walk back for 29 off 21. Kane Williamson joins David Warner at the crease.
What a delivery this was by Chahar to dismiss Bairstow:
After 7 overs, SRH are 47/1 (Warner 15, Pandey 29)
Dwayne Bravo comes on for his first over of the tournament. And the West Indies all-rounder concedes just five runs. His presence adds great depth to the CSK lineup.
After 6 overs, SRH are 42/1 (Warner 13, Pandey 27)
David Warner finally gets his first boundary. Shardul Thakur joins the attack and pitches it full, Warner hits it straight back in the air to collect four. That’s the end of the powerplay, SRH will be happy with their recovery so far after losing Jonny Bairstow early.
After 5 overs, SRH are 33/1 (Warner 6, Pandey 25)
That’s five overs in a row with a boundary by Manish Pandey. Superb batting this. Deepak Chahar pitches it short and it pulled for four with ease.
After 4 overs, SRH are 27/1 (Warner 5, Pandey 20)
Another four for Manish Pandey. Sam Curran pitches one on a length and is lifted over mid-on for four. Nine runs from that over.
After 3 overs, SRH are 18/1 (Warner 3, Pandey 14)
Stunning shot from Manish Pandey. He has come to the crease full of confidence. A lovely punch past mid-off for four to pick his third boundary. Another impressive over by Deepak Chahar, though.
After 2 overs, SRH are 12/1 (Warner 2, Pandey 8)
Another four for Manish Pandey, this time he lifts it over mid-off. A bit of shape for Sam Curran but not too threatening.
After 1 over, SRH are 6/1 (Warner 1, Pandey 4)
An outstanding first over from Deepak Chahar. Big swing for him both ways with perfect seam positioning. Just the start CSK needed. Manish Pandey gets off the mark with four as the edge flies past the slip fielder.
After 0.4 overs, SRH are 1/1 – Bairstow is gone!
