IPL 2020, CSK vs RCB as it happened: Another disappointing run-chase from CSK as RCB win big
Follow live coverage of match No 25 of Indian Premier League 2020.

Player of the match: Virat Kohli, of course.
MS Dhoni (quotes via iplt20.com): “I think the last four overs when we were bowling, we just needed to close it nicely. Batting has been a bit of a worry and today also it was evident. We need to do something about it. I think we are better off playing the other way round, playing the bigger shots even if you get out. That is something we can do in the coming games. I think it also depends on how you’ve performed so far in the tournament and our batting has lacked a bit of power from the sixth over onwards. Individuals can get tentative no matter how much confidence you give them. I feel that’s where we’ve not adapted or come up with plans against the bowlers who bowl from the 6th to the 14th over. I always told the players to focus more on the process - when you start thinking about results of the previous game, you put a burden. With the bowling we’ve shown we can restrict the oppposition. We’re either leaking at the start or in the last four. There are too many holes in the ship. I think overall you have to look at the combination, how many spinners, the fast bowlers. There’s always one spot you can play around. We started with five bowlers, now we have six. But our main worry remains the batting department. In the coming games we’ll try to be more expressive. You rather get out in the 16th or 17th over.”
Here’s how the points table looks like after CSK vs RCB:
Team | Pld | Won | Lost | Net RR | Pts |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Delhi Capitals | 6 | 5 | 1 | +1.267 | 10 |

RCB win by 37 runs!
I’m afraid #CSK look very long in the tooth, very short on energy and ambition. Will need something extraordinary to recover from this near hopeless situation

After 19 overs, CSK 126/8: In his first appearance of the season, Chris Morris finishes with 3/19 in his 4 overs. A performance to remember. Gets the wicket of Jadeja off the last ball. Low full toss hit to deep square leg.
After 18.4 overs, CSK 122/7: BRAVO GONE! One ball after dropping a catch, Padikkal makes up for it. Bravo is gone and the brilliant Morris has his 2nd. Kohli has a smile on his face.
Morris coming off a side strain and already nailing the yorkers. Wow!
— Static_357 (@Static_a357) October 10, 2020
After 18 overs, CSK 117/6: Jadeja and Bravo in the middle. Just the formalities left now. CSK need 53 from 12 balls.
After 17.3 overs, CSK 113/6 - UDANA STRIKES! Rayudu tries to hit one behind the stumps, hits one onto the stumps instead. A good slower ball from Udana and he immediately turns back to his captain at long on, must have been the plan.
After 17 overs, CSK 109/5 - Pietersen is expecting magic. CSK need 61 off 18 balls. Good over from Morris, he has been superb tonight. 1/10 from 3 overs.
It has been tough and painful to watch MS Dhoni in #IPL2020. pic.twitter.com/phssZI4SlL

After 16.2 overs, CSK 107/5 - Curran out: Oh you cheeky young man. Sam Curran stands his ground after clearly edging one behind the stumps off Morris. Given not out bizarrely, but RCB review.
A fantastic spell by @Sundarwashi5. His ability to keep watching the batsman’s feet till the last moment and adjust his line and length is a special ability.#RCBvMI #IPL2020
— Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) September 28, 2020
After 16 overs, CSK 106/4 - DHONI GONE! Chahal doesn’t have the best of record against Dhoni but after getting hit for a six down the ground, he dismisses the CSK captain. Thrown up wide, Dhoni gets into an awkward position and is caught at long off.
No one in CSK is going to replicate Kohli's late burst. If they want to win, they have to go big now, in 16 & 17.
— Prem Panicker (@prempanicker) October 10, 2020
This needed Curran.
After 15 overs, CSK 95/3: A boundary for Rayudu in that over. Seven conceded by Saini. CSK need 74 off 30.
After 14.2 overs, CSK 89/3 - Oh dear, Jagadeesan run out. So poor from the youngster. Hit the ball to mid-off and did not even bother putting in a dive at the end as Morris gets the direct hit. But it was a good innings, actually. Better than some of the stuff served by CSK batsmen in this tournament.
In this form, CSK can't even win the TNPL.
— K Balakumar (@kbalakumar) October 10, 2020
Kohli was so kind to CSK after watching the run chase he decided to give one over to Dube.
— Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) October 10, 2020
After 14 overs, CSK 89/2 (Rayudu 30, Jagadeesan 33) Jagadeesan starts off with a four off the first ball of the 14th over. Rayudu is almost run out, had Finch hit the stumps direct. Rayudu, well short, manages to get a single and then hits the next ball for four. Clearly words have been spoken during the timeout. 4-1-4-1-2-wd-1 in that over.
Timeout taken...
Opposition coaches in these mid game interviews:
— cricBC (@cricBC) October 10, 2020
Ahh, look we know CSK is a dangerous team with MS and others still to come. We are not taking them lightly!
What they mean:
LOL, we are winning this even if you blindfold all our bowlers and fielders.
After 13 overs, CSK 75/2: INTENT LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! Jagadeesan, perhaps still not ingrained in CSK’s ways, is starting to show intent as early as the 13th over. Two boundaries off Chahal, one conventionally swept and one reverse.
#CSK lacking josh I’m afraid...
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) October 10, 2020
After 12 overs, CSK 63/2: Really, when you cannot put away a full toss half-stump high outside off stump, you have issues. Rayudu can just hit a single. Saini’s over goes for 7 after Rayudu hit a four down the ground earlier in the over.
After 11 overs, CSK 56/2: Decent over for CSK, Jagadeesan hits a four down the ground off Chahal.
There have been four instances now in #IPL2020 when a side has failed to reach even 50 at the half-way stage (10 overs). Chennai Super Kings have done so thrice alone!#CSKvsRCB #RCBvsCSK
— Rajneesh Gupta (@rgcricket) October 10, 2020
Virat Kohli’s Wagon Wheel (via iplt20.com): Just 5 dot balls he played out. CSK have played out 30 dot balls in the first 10 overs.

After 10 overs, CSK 47/2 (Rayudu 17, Jagadeesan 7): Just 3 runs from Morris’ over.
After 9 overs, CSK 44/2 (Rayudu 14, Jagadeesan 7): Timeout taken after a decent over for CSK. Rayudu helped himself to a boundary over third man off Udana.
8 overs 35/2 chasing 170. Absolutely ridiculous batting. Single-handedly bringing down the quality of the entire league. #CSKvsRCB #ipl2020
— Rohit Sankar (@imRohit_SN) October 10, 2020
After 8 overs, CSK 35/2 (Rayudu 7, Jagadeesan 5): Another good over from Sundar. Just 5 runs. Pietersen is not happy at all with the lack of intent in CSK’s running between the wickets.
In 2008 everyone mocked RCB for assembling a Test side. In 2020, CSK are playing Test cricket in chase of 170. If there was crowd in there, they would be booing them. They are not just showing the intent.
— Venkata Krishna B (@venkatatweets) October 10, 2020
After 7 overs, CSK 30/2 (Rayudu 4, Jagadeesan 3): Good first over from Chahal, just 4 off it. CSK are rebuilding here but feels like they are once again leaving too much for the back-end.
Couple of HUGE wickets for Washi. 🔥🔥

Delivering in the Powerplay AGAIN! 🔝 #PlayBold #IPL2020 #WeAreChallengers #Dream11IPL #CSKvRCB pic.twitter.com/XiwN4efQ20
After 6 overs, CSK 26/2 (Rayudu 2, Jagadeesan 1): 2-0-11-2 in the powerplay for Sundar.
Washington Sundar interview: ‘An exciting challenge when the best batsmen go after you in powerplay’
CSK 25/2 after 5.4: WICKET! Washington Sundar loves bowling in the powerplay doesn’t he? Second wicket for him, this time Watson is bowled through the gate as he went for a big sweep. Great flight & turn on that one.
All 11 CSK players can bat to some extent. Not sure if they have a long middle order or a long tail.
— Sagar (@sagarcasm) October 10, 2020
After 5 overs, CSK 21/1 (Watson 10, Rayudu 2): Five dot balls from Saini’s 2nd over too. Brilliant from the pacer. Just 2 runs from that over. 19 dot balls in the first 5 overs of CSK’s chase.
After 4 overs, CSK 19/1 (Watson 10):WICKET! A big, big one for RCB. The in-form Faf du Plessis is dismissed cheaply (8 off 10). Washington Sundar strikes in his 1st over. The SA batsman had played similar shots earlier in the over and missed the fielders too. Strange, that. Went for a big shot again on the leg side, Morris takes a good catch.
After 3 overs, CSK 13/0 (Watson 9, du Plessis 3): You wouldn’t be surprised by this start from CSK. Watson breaks the shackles after a series of 0s and 1s to hit a four off the last ball in that Udana over. Brought a fielder in on the leg-side from deep and then bowled on Watson’s pad to spoil a good over.
After 2 overs, CSK 6/0 (Watson 4, du Plessis 1): Top first over from Saini. Just a wide and a single.
After 1 over, CSK 4/0 (Watson 4, du Plessis 0): Five dot balls and a boundary in the middle of Morris’ first over. Strayed on the pads, Watson put it away. But a good over otherwise.
Morris, playing his first match of IPL 2020, to start off
9.27 pm: From 44 off 35 to 90 off 52: Virat Kohli scored 46 runs off his last 17 balls. And how good was this shot? He certainly enjoyed it.

End of 20 overs, RCB 169/4: (Kohli 90, Dube 22): The over that started with Kohli doing ABD proud, ends as a reminder of just why Kohli is a beast. 4-2-2-2-2-wd-1 in the final over as Kohli runs like a mad man, he finished 90* off 52 balls. Dube 22 off 14.
Hats off @imVkohli, whatever the outcome of the match spectacular knock!

CORRECTION: After 19 overs, RCB are 155/4 (Kohli 77, Dube 22): An eventful over from Shardul. After getting hit for a six, he bowls a full toss at Kohli’s head that is dropped in the deep by Jadeja. But rightly called no ball and off the free hit too, he is dropped (well, kinda). Big over again for RCB.
Partnership is now 62. Sensational from RCB.

Dropped off a no ball and a free hit, only Virat.

After 18 overs, RCB are 141/4 (Kohli 68, Dube 18) SENSATIONAL! Two superb sixes from Kohli off Curran. First, down the ground and the next, flicked nonchalantly over square leg. Moves on to 68 off 43 balls. He is on fire! Dube also hit a six in that over but that should have been caught on the boundary by Jagadeesan. TWENTY FOUR RUNS IN THAT OVER.
After 17 overs, RCB are 117/4 (Kohli 53, Dube 11) HALF CENTURY FOR KOHLI! He’s back in form alright. With wickets falling around him, the RCB captain has reached a fifty off 39 balls. Classy knock. Expensive over from Thakur. 14 off it as Dube also helped himself to a boundary.
After 16 overs, RCB are 103/4 (Kohli 44, Dube 6)
Shivam Dube gets his first four with a powerful drive straight back. Karn Sharma finishes with figures of 0/34. Time for a strategic timeout. RCB would want to get close to 50 off the last 4 overs.
#RCB need a Kohli special to post decent score. He’s had some luck today, so should make it count
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) October 10, 2020
After 14.3 overs, RCB are 93/4 – Sundar is gone!
OUT! Another wicket for CSK, this time Curran removes Sundar. The left-hander attempts a square-cut but edges it to Dhoni. Shivam Dube is the new man at the crease.
After 14 overs, RCB are 86/3 (Kohli 34, Sundar 10)
Another good over from Jaddu, just five from it. Meanwhile, Kohli has crossed 6,000 runs in T20 cricket. Another milestone for the great man.
After 13 overs, RCB are 81/3 (Kohli 30, Sundar 9)
Shot! Karn pitches it up and Sundar hits it over long-on for six. There are 42 balls remaining in this innings, RCB would want to get close to 70 more at least.
After 12 overs, RCB are 69/3 (Kohli 26, Sundar 1)
Ravindra Jadeja joins the attack and delivers a top over, just two runs from it. Washington Sundar has joined Virat Kohli at the crease now. RCB need something special from their skipper.

— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) October 10, 2020
Coz you don’t trust the depth of your batting you try & stay there till the end, but if you get out, those batsmen down the order (under confident & anxious) have to be at their best in an extreme pressure situation in the few balls left. Not easy.

After 10.5 overs, RCB are 67/3 – ABD IS GONE!
ABD IS OUT FOR A DUCK! A brilliant out-swinger from Shardul Thakur and Dhoni takes an easy catch. Two wickets in the over from Shardul! CSK on top in Dubai!
After 10.2 overs, RCB are 67/2 – Padikkal is gone!
OUT! Devdutt Padikkal mis-times a drive and Shardul Thakur gets the wicket. CSK are doing well to keep things tight. RCB have Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers at the crease now as Padikkal departs for 33 off 34.
After 10 overs, RCB are 65/1 (Padikkal 33, Kohli 23)
First six of the match! Karn tosses it up and Padikkal steps out to whack it a long way. RCB need more of this. They have ABD, Gurkeerat, Dube, Morris and Sundar to follow.
After 9 overs, RCB are 55/1 (Padikkal 25, Kohli 21)
Another good over for CSK, this time from Bravo. Kohli has been busy at the crease so far and Padikkal hasn’t really been fluent. RCB would want to up the ante soon.

After 8 overs, RCB are 50/1 (Padikkal 22, Kohli 19)
Dhoni introduces spin as Karn Sharma joins the attack. No real turn for the leggie but he does well to keep it tight. Just four singles from that over.
After 7 overs, RCB are 46/1 (Padikkal 20, Kohli 17)
Shot! Virat Kohli’s cover-drive... one of the most pleasing sights in cricket. Dwayne Bravo pitches it full and the RCB skipper steps forward and drives it beautifully for a four. RCB are starting to get a move on. And it’s time for a strategic timeout.
After 6 overs, RCB are 36/1 (Padikkal 17, Kohli 11)
Shardul Thakur comes into the attack and RCB get the over they were looking for. Both batsmen get a four each with risk-free shots. Ten runs come from that over. But CSK will be happy with their performance in the powerplay.
Missed the sensational finish to the KXIP vs KKR game? Watch it here:
After 5 overs, RCB are 25/1 (Padikkal 13, Kohli 6)
This is brilliant stuff from Deepak Chahar. He concedes just four singles in his third over and has figures of 1/10 at the moment.
Quite fascinating to see the amount of swing we seem to get in the first over and almost none in the next over or so. It’s more seam after swing. #csk #CSKvsRCB #rcb #RCBvCSK
— RK (@RK_sports) October 10, 2020
After 4 overs, RCB are 21/1 (Padikkal 11, Kohli 4)
A good over from Sam Curran, just six runs from it. CSK’s new-ball bowlers are doing well to build pressure from both ends. The RCB batters don’t look like they’re in a hurry either.
After 2.5 overs, RCB are 13/1 – Finch is gone!
OUT! CSK get their first wicket as Aaron Finch attempts a wild slog and gets clean bowled. Top bowling from Deepak Chahar. Virat Kohli walks out to the crease.
After 2 overs, RCB are 11/0 (Padikkal 8, Finch 1)
A superb shot by Devdutt Padikkal to get the first boundary of the match. Sam Curran drifts onto the pads and the left-hander clips it stylishly past mid-wicket for four.
That was a unbelievable result for @KKRiders ! U cannot take the game so deep if your openers are set ! Puts too much pressure on the middle order with no time to settle ! Bad luck @lionsdenkxip #ipl2020 well played @RealShubmanGill @mayankcricket !@DineshKarthik game changer!
