Live coverage of the first One-Day International between India and England in Bristol.

Preview: Shafali Verma could boost India’s World Cup preparation as tough test awaits versus England
India 201/8 (50 overs), England 202/2 (34.5)
Player of the match: Tammy Beaumont
9.55 pm: Mithali Raj in the post-match presentation about dot balls. Says it is a concern for sure and they need to address it. Talks about more intent across all departments. Adds that there needs to be a look at the composition for next match, getting another spinner and adding to the batting depth.
India 201/8 (50 overs), England 202/2 (34.5): England take a 4-2 lead on points in the multi-format series with two more ODIs and three T20Is to follow.

ENGLAND WIN BY 8 WICKETS: World No 1 in ODIs Tammy Beaumont and vice-captain Nat Sciver score terrific half centuries as England win with 15.1 overs to spare in Bristol. As convincing as it could get! Concerns grow for Mithali Raj & Co.

Vinayakk Mohanarangan: When India lost their first wicket, the anchors dropped. Big time. It was great bowling too, of course, but there is a difference from batting to score runs and batting to stay in the middle. When England lost their first wicket, they have kept looking for gaps. If they are willing to, there is so much to learn for the Indian batting lineup from this England batting display. This Indian batting unit, without wholesale personnel change, is actually more than capable of finding another couple of gears. Hope that’s the takeaway.
England 187/2 after 32 overs (Target 202): FIRST SIX! Superbly struck down the ground by Sciver. What batting! Superb strokeplay. 11 runs from the Kaur over.
Part of me wants to swaddle this 🇮🇳 team & hide them away from all the crap they are going to get after this game. But the other part is well aware that the criticism is warranted. Plenty of it needs to be taken on board. Something's got to give. Cannot keep playing at this pace.
— Ananya Upendran (@a_upendran11) June 27, 2021
HALF CENTURY! England’s all-format vice captain Nat Sciver gets to yet another fifty against India. She has batted like a dream in her innings today. Follows the landmark with a couple of boundaries. England cruising towards a big win. 176/2 after 32 overs.
England 165/2 after 31 overs (Target 202): A big over for England before heading into the drinks break. Bisht has not been allowed any rhythm today, Sciver with a couple of boundaries.
England 153/2 after 30 overs (Target 202): Deepti comes back with a 2-run over. Groundstaff are getting ready for a spell of rain it would seem.
England 151/2 after 29 overs (Target 202): Beaumont is in a hurry! After a lofted shot over cover for a four in Bisht’s over, she goes big again. She actually thinks she has skied one to the fielder but it falls away mid-off. 150 comes up for India.
England 141/2 after 28 overs (Target 202): Oh dear. Indiscipline setting in for India. Two no balls in Shikha Pandey’s over, and the second free hit is put away for four by Sciver who has looked in tremendous touch in the course of this little innings so far. England need 61 off 132 balls.
England 129/2 after 26 overs (Target 202) India lose their second review as Shikha Pandey comes back into the attack. Appeal for caught behind against Sciver, but no bat involved. Good take by Bhatia though, standing up to the stumps.
Been looking forward to watching Sophia Dunkley bat on her ODI debut after that superb 74* in the Test, but doubt she'll get a hit today.#ENGvIND | #ENGWvINDW
— Annesha Ghosh (@ghosh_annesha) June 27, 2021
England 124/2 after 24 overs (Target 202) Sciver not wasting any of the boundary balls that come her way. Always busy at the crease. Another four in the Harmanpreet over.
I agree that you can't have two players at no 3 & 4 playing a certain way. Going ahead, India will need to choose between one of Punam Raut or Mithali Raj. But someone still needs to get runs on the board. No one else did! And we are criticising the one who did.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) June 27, 2021
England 114/2 after 22 overs (Target 202): Vastrakar gets cut away for four by Beaumont which was all about hand-speed. Not a bad ball at all, scythed behind point with ridiculous ease. And 11 runs in the last two overs with little risk.
England bring up their 100 in the 19th over. India brought theirs up in the 32nd. #ENGvIND https://t.co/h2CTkRpF0h
— Isabelle Westbury (@izzywestbury) June 27, 2021
England 103/2 after 20 overs (Target 202): DROPPED! Oh dear. The last thing India needed at the moment. A familiar problem for India as Eka Bisht puts down a catch at short-fine. Got her foot into a tangle while tracking back and Nat Sciver gets a life. Harmanpreet Kaur the unlucky bowler.
HALF CENTURY! The world No 1 ODI batter keeps up her wonderful batting form. Tammy Beaumont has raced to a fifty off just 48 balls. Terrific innings so far. England 101/2 after 19 overs.
England 95/2 after 18 overs (Target 202): Once again, a clear case of England not looking to drop anchor when a wicket falls. A new batter comes in and looks to find the gaps, keep the scoreboard moving where possible. Sciver plays a lofted pull shot for four and that is followed by a classy drive down the ground.
ODI wicket 97 for Ekta Bisht, closing in on Cathryn Fitzpatrick's record...#ENGvIND https://t.co/ozdqYIIPw8
— hypocaust (@_hypocaust) June 27, 2021
Ekta Bisht! What a ball!
— Ananya Upendran (@a_upendran11) June 27, 2021
Slowed it up, gave it some air, and beat Knight in the flight. Such a canny bowler. #ENGvIND
England 83/2 after 15.5 overs: WICKET! As it so often happens, a break in play results in a breakthrough for the bowling team. Ekta Bisht removes England captain Heather Knight after drinks. Knight comes down the track, looks to drive down the ground, the ball straightens enough to beat her outside edge and clip the top of off. With England cruising, this offers India a look back into the match.
England 82/1 after 15 overs: (Target 202) Mark Butcher questions the need for proper anchors in ODI batting lineups these days and Mel Jones agrees too. It’s a debate that really needs to happen in the Indian dressing room. Time for a drinks break, with England cruising towards a big win.
India women innings:

Overall: 20 boundaries
46 dots in the first 10 overs
106 dots between 11-40 overs
24 dots in the last 10 overs
Nearly 60% dots in the entire innings. Ridiculous!#ENGvIND
England 74/1 after 13 overs: (Target 202) The fifty partnership has come up between Beaumont and Knight. More intent on show from Beaumont from Bisht’s second over.
Just the content I was hoping to inspire. Enjoy Jhulan while we still can. https://t.co/J6Yy15SpjK

England’s 1st powerplay: 61/1
India’s 1st powerplay: 27/2
England 61/1 after 10 overs: (Target 202) England respecting the control Goswami brings and not taking chances against her. But Bisht comes on to bowl the 10th and Beaumont immediately puts her under pressure to start with two boundaries.
England 52/1 after 8 overs: (Target 202) 4-1-4-4! Terrific ball-striking from Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont, taking on Pooja Vastrakar in her first over. 13 runs from it. Tactical move to not let the youngster settle in. The 50 comes up in the 8th over for England. What a start for England.
England 32/0 after 6 overs: (Target 202) An over that was shaping into a really good one for Pandey, is made into a really gone for England. Two boundaries for the in-form Beaumont. England not letting the fall of wicket snap their early momentum.
Over 4.4: WICKET! That’s a breakthrough India really needed. And who else but Jhulan Goswami to provide it. Good catch by Taniya Bhatia and Winfield-Hill’s entertaining innings is short-lived. Short of length this time around, LWH looked to punch it behind point but the ball straightens enough to get the outside edge.
It's amazing how quick England are between the wickets. Already a big difference between the teams there. #ENGvIND
— Ananya Upendran (@a_upendran11) June 27, 2021
India's innings featured 181 dot balls (30.1 overs).
— Lavanya L Narayanan (@lav_narayanan) June 27, 2021
Just. Gah. #ENGvIND | #ENGWvINDW
England 32/1 after 6 overs: (Target 202) The rare away moving delivery from Shikha Pandey gets LWH in a tangle but the leading edge falls safely.
England 18/0 after 3 overs: (Target 202) There is definite intent from LWH at the start to go hard. A terrific drive through cover, followed by a lofted jab over mid-on. England are off the blocks quickly.
England 9/0 after 2 overs: (Target 202) Shikha Pandey too gets the white ball moving early in her spell and it’s no different here. A massive LBW appeal in that over against Beaumont, and India review. But review lost, moving too much and missing leg stump by some distance. Winfield-Hill gets away with an inside edge as well at the end of the over. Eventful.
Can’t spell Jhulan without swing. No seriously, jhula means swing in Bengali. #OkBye
— Tareque Laskar (@tarequelaskar) June 27, 2021
England 2/0 after 1 over: An absolute peach of an outswinger in the first over the highlight as Jhulan Goswami starts as Jhulan Goswami does.
Just like batters are asked to bat with freedom and, to borrow a cliché, allowed to "express' themselves, I'd imagine the discussion in the Indian team huddle going into the defence would involve encouraging Ekta Bisht to bowl with freedom so she can "express" herself.#ENGvIND

The last time England women failed to chase an ODI target of under 220 was against India at Mumbai in 2019.
The last time they did so at home, was against Australia at Lord's in 2013.#ENGvIND
India 201/8 after 50 overs: Mithali Raj (72) was the only Indian batter to get going. It was a long, hard crawl to 201/8 at the end of the 50 overs. Batting isn’t easy but intent might be the key for England. We might be in for an interesting chase.
India 197/8 after 48.3 overs: WICKET! It was close but Taniya Bhatia pays the price of losing her balance. She has been stumped brilliantly by Jones off Brunt.
India 192/7 after 47.1 overs: WICKET! Ecclestone strikes again. Vastrakar (15) going for the reverse sweep, missing the ball completely and getting trapped LBW. They went for the review but three reds.
India 180/6 after 45.3 overs: WICKET! Just as Raj was kicking things up a notch, Ecclestone strikes. The batter tried to go for the late cut off a ball that was too close to cut and got bowled instead. 72 off 108 balls. A fine innings given the circumstances.
India 178/5 after 45 overs: Raj has finally gone up a gear. A Lovely late cut gave her another four. Seven runs off the Sciver over.
India 171/5 after 44 overs: A big over. Finally. 15 runs off the Shrubsole over. One for Vastrakar and two for Raj. The Indian innings making a solid move towards 200.
India 156/5 after 43 overs: Just seven over left in the innings and Vastrakar found the boundary once to ease the pressure a bit.

Hopefully Shafali Verma can help change things in the near future. #ENGWvINDW
Vinayakk Mohanarangan: Mithali Raj starts her 23rd year in international cricket with her 63rd 50-plus score in ODIs.
India 149/5 after 41.3 overs: WICKET! Shrubsole strikes to trap Sharma LBW. She made a fine 30 off 46 balls. India went for the review but it didn’t help. Three reds.
India 134/4 after 40 overs: Raj and Sharma have brought up their 50-run stand in 79 balls. This has been a good stand for India so far.
India 128/4 after 38 overs: India not getting the big over and Deepti might be the batter to do it for them. One of these batters has to take a few more risks now.
India 124/4 after 37 overs: India just haven’t been able to find the boundary line enough.
India 120/4 after 36 overs: Three-run over. Slow and far too steady for an ODI.
India 117/4 after 35 overs: Raj has moved to 40 off 80 balls – she is scoring faster now but still needs to find a higher gear for the rest of the innings. 140 dot balls in the India innings already.
India 113/4 after 34 overs: Raj taking things up a notch with another four off the first ball of the Ecclestone over.
India 105/4 after 33 overs: steady over by Glenn. At the current RR, India will reach 159. At 6 an over, they will take it to 207.
India 102/4 after 32 overs: Another good over for India. The singles coming that little bit more freely now. This is the bare minimum of what Raj need to do. Deepti has had a good tour with the bat and can be expected to do more than just hang around.
India 96/4 after 31 overs: Now, Raj getting into the act too. Another four down the ground. India have been far too passive today and losing wickets hasn’t helped.
India 90/4 after 30 overs: Deepti Sharma ends the over with a solid four down the ground. Used her feet and bam! India need a few more like that to just get this innings moving.
Don't get me wrong, Mithali Raj is a brilliant batter and incredible servant to the game, but this innings will never win a game for India against this England. #ENGvIND
— Isabelle Westbury (@izzywestbury) June 27, 2021
India 84/4 after 28 overs: It was a change of ends for Ecclestone and it paid off immediately. Spin in tandem now.
Over 27.2: WICKET! Terrific from Sophie Ecclestone and Amy Jones and Harmanpreet Kaur is out for 1. A slider from the spinner, sharp catch off the outside edge by the keeper. India in deep trouble. 84/4 and we are already at the last recognised batting pair.
India 84/3 after 27 overs: Sarah Glenn is the next bowler, India really need to consider going after her but the fall of wicket doesn’t help (perhaps why Knight is bringing her on now to get a few overs out of the way). Kaur, who is also a slow starter, misses out on a full toss. The captain and vice captain have a task on their hands.
Over 25.2: WICKET! Just after the halfway mark in the innings, Kate Cross breaks a 50-plus partnership. Punam Raut falls going for a big shot. Almost the same shot she went for in the last over that saw her almost clear the fence but this time, it’s a skier off a leading edge. She made 32 off 61 balls.
After 25 overs, India are 83/2: The run-rate is creeping up towards 4 an over (last 5 overs 20) as we get to the halfway mark.
After 24 overs, India are 79/2: Big shot alert! Raut goes after Cross and plays a lofted shot over midwicket, she plays this well when set. Almost clears the rope too. Partnership is now worth 52 runs off 86 balls.
Someone needs to change gears from here to get back into the momentum, playing too defensive will put pressure on the coming batters.#ENGvsIND
— Reema Malhotra (@ReemaMalhotra8) June 27, 2021
After 22 overs, India are 69/2: Ecclestone and Cross bowling in tandem now and the two bowlers rarely give anything easy to the opponents. Things are hard for the Indian batters at the moment. Raj finds her first boundary with a signature cover drive in Cross’ over. Moves on to 17 off 44 with that. More shots in that over, well middled, but found fielders.
The ⭐ with the ball for England in Tests is into the ODI attack now - Sophie Ecclestone. #INDvENG
— Female Cricket (@imfemalecricket) June 27, 2021
Worth noting that India’s approach after losing the openers is invariably dictated by their middle order strength (or lack thereof). The partnerships are often laboured in this phase of the innings because a collapse always seems to be around the corner. Which is also why the team selection is a bit baffling. Jhulan Goswami at No 8 is not a deep batting lineup.
After 20 overs, India are 62/2: There is life in this pitch for sure. The cutters are rising sharply every now and then and there is enough in it for bowlers. Better rotation of strike in the last couple of overs but still going at 3 an over.
After 18 overs, India are 56/2: The dot balls are piling up for India as Sciver and Cross keep things tight. Mithali takes a quick single off the last ball of 18th, something they could use more of. But this Indian innings is heading nowhere at the moment. Far too familiar, unfortunately.
If India are to put up totals of 250+ consistently, they cannot afford SRs of 25 in the Powerplay. From anyone. No matter what catching up happens later.
— Snehal Pradhan #MaskUp (@SnehalPradhan) June 27, 2021
And come the 2022 World Cup, teams around the world WILL need totals of 250+ to win ODIs.
After 16 overs, India are 51/2: The fifty comes up in he 16th over for India. Another cover driven four for Punam Raut who is looking in better touch now but still striking below 50.0
After 15 overs, India are 45/2: Time for a drinks break. Sciver tests Mithali with a couple of bouncers. The English seamers have actually used the short ball really well today. The Indian captain didn’t look comfortable.
(Scores have been corrected in the previous updates)
After 13 overs, India are 42/2: Oh, terrific shots by Punam Raut1 That should help her get going. Sciver goes full but her line is a bit too wide and the swing not threatening. Two elegant cover drives for four.
After 12 overs, India are 33/2: Sciver and Shrubsole keep things tight post powerplay 1 with two three-run overs. India really need to look at upping the ante, at least through strike rotation.
Anyone else think Raut at 3 puts a truckload more pressure on Mithali Raj and her scoring rate? #ENGvIND
— Ananya Upendran (@a_upendran11) June 27, 2021
India’s first powerplay of 10 overs (27/2)
First 28 balls: 23 runs
Next 32 balls: 4 runs, 2 wickets
Over 9.4: WICKET! Smriti Mandhana did not quite look set in the middle and she is bowled by Anya Shrubsole. It was a bit too full to play the cut shot, Mandhana’s feet were stuck on the crease too and the hands couldn’t save her. The stumps are rattled. India struggling in Bristol. 27/2.
After 9 overs, India are 27/1: GOOD REVIEW: Raut is given out LBW but she reviews immediately. It looked the in-dipper did too much at first look and the tracker confirms that. Raut survives, but she is struggling on 1 off 19 balls.
After 8 overs, India are 25/1: Punam Raut is a well established slow-starter and she is having a bit of a struggle at the moment in the middle. Batting on 1 off 16 balls. Got rapped on the pads a couple of times and then the ones she did manage to hit, found the fielders.

Shafali Verma's ODI debut was entertaining but short-lived, Katherine Brunt provides the big first breakthrough.
🎥 ECB pic.twitter.com/iGMXXBuCAU
After 4.5 overs, India are 23/1: WICKET! Brunt gets Shafali! She hit back-to-back fours earlier in the over. The first one was a mid-timed cross-batted slog which landed safely and ran away, the next one was push past backward point. But Brunt has the last laugh as Shafali mistimes the pull to get caught by Shrubsole at mid-on.
After 4 overs, India are 15/0: Cracking shot from Mandhana! England have packed the off-side ring for her, unsurprisingly, but the left-hander managed to find the gap with a strong square-cut. Five runs from that Shrubsole over.
This is the first time in 22 matches, that Smriti Mandhana has batted at #1, rather than #2, in an ODI.#ENGvIND https://t.co/p2wspQ3xJr
— hypocaust (@_hypocaust) June 27, 2021
After 3 overs, India are 10/0: Another good over from Brunt. Tested Shafali with a bouncer but the 17-year-old managed to get it away for single despite getting into an awkward position. Two runs from that over.
After 2 overs, India are 8/0: All class from Shafali! Shrubsole got it to swing in sharply but the right-hander maintained her balance and timed it beautifully to pick a four through mid-wicket. Five runs from that over.

After 1 over, India are 3/0: Mandhana gets off the mark with a punch past extra cover off the fourth ball. Shafali then gets her first run in ODI cricket with a flick past mid-wicket. Steady start by the experienced Brunt. The right-arm pacer gets good shape into the left-hander and keeps things tight in the first over.
3.30 pm: Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana are at the crease for India. Katherine Brunt has the new ball in hand for England. The conditions are quite windy and overcast in Bristol. Here we go!
