A bridge in the Saran district of Bihar collapsed on Thursday, making it the tenth such incident to have been reported from the state in 15 days, reported PTI.

“The small bridge was constructed 15 years ago,” District Magistrate Aman Samir told the news agency. “I am going to the spot. Several other officials of the district administration have already reached there. The exact cause of the bridge collapse is yet to be ascertained but desilting work was recently undertaken.”

Two more bridges have collapsed in the last 24 hours in Saran. While one of them was in Janta Bazar, another was in Lahladpur.

A portion of another bridge over the Gandaki river in the Siwan district had also collapsed on Wednesday morning, reported PTI.

No casualties were reported in the incident. The district administration has launched an investigation into the matter.

The bridge was constructed in 1982-’83 and was undergoing repairs for the last few days, Siwan’s Deputy Development Commissioner Mukesh Kumar was quoted as saying.

Villagers said that the heavy rainfall in the past few days may have contributed to the collapse.

On June 22, a portion of another bridge collapsed in the Darounda area of Siwan district.

Incidents of bridge collapse have been reported in other districts including Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran and Kishanganj recently, which has prompted the state government to set up a high-level committee to investigate these incidents.
