Maldives vice-president arrested for alleged plot to assassinate president
President Abdulla Yameen had escaped unhurt when an explosion hit a boat he was travelling on in September.
Maldives Vice-President Ahmed Adeeb was arrested on Saturday for “high treason”, said home minister Umar Naseer on Twitter. Adeeb has been held under detention in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate President Abdulla Yameen last month, the Maldivian police confirmed. Adeeb was arrested at Maldives' international airport after he returned to the country from Singapore.
On September 28, President Yameen was on a boat with his wife when it was hit by an explosion. Yameen escaped unhurt, but his wife, an aide and a bodyguard were injured. Yameen had appointed Adeeb as his deputy three months ago after impeaching his original running mate Mohamed Jameel on charges of treason, reported the Press Trust of India.
