Assam Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Himanta Biswa Sarma won the Jalukbari constituency on Monday with a margin of 89,434 against the Congress’ Bidisha Neog.

In Jorhat, the Congress’ state chief Gaurav Gogoi lost to BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami by 23,182 votes.

Gogoi, the Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat, was seeking to make his Assembly elections debut. On the other hand, Goswami, a five-time MLA, is seeking a third consecutive term.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won the Assembly elections, bagging 102 seats. The Congress-led bloc won 21 constituencies.

A party or an alliance needs 64 seats in the 126-member Assembly for a majority.

The counting began at 8 am. Polling was held on April 9. Several exit polls have predicted that the BJP would win the elections.

The voter turnout in Assam was 85.9%, the highest ever in the state. In the 2021 polls, the state had recorded a turnout of 82%.

The Election Commission did not carry out a special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Assam, unlike in 12 other states and Union Territories. Instead, a routine “special revision” was conducted, with door-to-door verification between November 22 and December 20. This process did not involve document verification, unlike the special intensive revision.

The final list released on February 10 showed that Assam had 2.4 crore voters, which was a 0.9% decrease compared to the draft roll.
