The Bharatiya Janata Party announced Suvendu Adhikari as the next chief minister of West Bengal. Adhikari was elected the leader of the BJP’s legislature party at a meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier in the day.
The new BJP government in West Bengal will take oath at 11 am in Kolkata.
Adhikari served as a Cabinet minister in the TMC government in the state between 2011 and 2020 before defecting to the BJP in December 2020. He was the leader of Opposition in the Assembly between 2021 and 2026. Read more.
The Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) extended unconditional support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to form the government in Tamil Nadu. With this, the party, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has crossed the majority mark of 118. When the results were announced on Monday, the TVK had emerged as the single-largest party in the Assembly election in Tamil Nadu, with 108 seats.
The TVK has already secured the support of the Congress, which has five MLAs, and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, which has two. The two communist parties have two MLAs each, taking the total number of legislators in support of the TVK-led government to 119.
However, the communist parties have said that they will not be part of the Cabinet and that they only decided to support TVK to ensure that there is new elections do not have to be held. Read on.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen corporator Mateen Majid Patel was booked for allegedly sheltering suspended Tata Consultancy Services employee Nida Khan in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Khan was arrested on Thursday night, more than 40 days after she was named in a first information report pertaining to sexual harassment and hurting religious sentiments.
Khan’s lawyer, Baba Sayyad, said that she was taken into custody after the Nashik sessions court on May 2 denied her anticipatory bail. Her family has said that she is four months pregnant.
Between March 26 and April 3, the police filed nine cases against eight TCS employees for allegedly sexually harassing nine persons and hurting religious sentiments. The other seven TCS employees have also been arrested. Read more.
The Supreme Court criticised the Madhya Pradesh government for delaying approval to prosecute BJP minister Vijay Shah for his remarks allegedly targeting Army spokesperson Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. A decision on a request from a Special Investigation Team to sanction the action had to be submitted two weeks ago, said the bench.

The Supreme Court expressed disappointment about the slow pace of the trial in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case in which Ashish Mishra, the son of former Union minister Ajay Mishra, is an accused. No reason had been given for why witnesses were not examined in the past two months, noted the bench.
“We direct the presiding judge to take lawful measures to secure the presence of witnesses,” the bench said. Read more.
