Centre refuses to clear documentary on beef-eating
The film was made by students from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.
The ministry of information and broadcasting has refused to clear a 21-minute film that deals with “beef-eating practices in Mumbai” for a documentary festival in Delhi. The documentary, titled Caste on the Menu Card, was the only one among 35 that was denied exemption to be screened, according to the Centre for Civil Society, which is the organiser of the festival.
Festival director Manoj Mathew said that senior officials of the I&B ministry denied the exemption for screening due to “the current political situation over the beef ban issue”, reported The Indian Express. However, an official from the I&B ministry said that the exemption was not provided because inadequate information was provided to the ministry about the documentary.
The film was made by students of the School of Media and Cultural Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and “delves into the idea of food as a site of exclusion by focusing on beef-eating practices in Mumbai”.
