Maneka Gandhi advocates 'close watch' on Nirbhaya case juvenile
The 20-year-old is due to be released in December after serving his three-year sentence.
Union minister for women and child development Maneka Gandhi on Monday expressed helplessness about the law that will allow the juvenile convict in the 2012 Delhi gangrape case to walk free. Gandhi asked for a "close watch" on the juvenile once he is released in December after serving his three-year sentence, reported the Press Trust of India.
Gandhi said, "Let us not confuse justice with the law. I don't know whether justice has been served but the law has certainly been adhered to. He served his sentence and he is lawfully coming out. There is nothing we can do about it until or unless he commits another crime."
The juvenile was 17 and the youngest of six men who raped and tortured the 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in the capital in December 2012. She died 13 days later in a hospital in Singapore where she had been taken for treatment by the government. Four of the six convicts have been sentenced to death, while one committed suicide in prison.
