Tamil Nadu rains recede, toll reaches 87
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of eight people who died due to drowning, wall collapse and electrocution.
Tamil Nadu was slowly limping back to normalcy on Wednesday as rains reduced in intensity in almost all districts after days of unrelenting fury. The toll in flooding and other rain-related incidents climbed to 87, reported PTI. Authorities continued to visit flood-hit areas to provide relief to those affected, while state-wide medical camps were organised to test people for water-borne diseases, a senior official said.
In Kanchipuram, one of the worst-hit areas, 16,613 people were evacuated by 133 boats and 116 special camps were functioning, where 34,426 people have been housed. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa took stock of the rescue efforts by the Army, the National Disaster Response Force, the coast guard, the police and revenue authorities. She also announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of eight more persons who died due to drowning, wall collapses and electrocution. She had earlier allocated Rs 500 crore towards relief and rehabilitation in the state.
