Paris attacks mastermind might have committed suicide, says French envoy
Francois Richier said the authorities are still waiting for a final confirmation as to whether Abdelhamid Abaaoud is dead.
French ambassador to India Francois Richier said that Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the suspected mastermind of the Paris terror attacks, may have committed suicide during the raid conducted by the French police at an apartment in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Denis on Wednesday. Abaaoud, the 28-year-old Islamic State militant from Belgium, was believed to be inside the apartment with five other heavily armed people when the police operation began.
Richier told NDTV that Abaaoud committed suicide according to preliminary information he had received. He added that the authorities are still waiting for a final confirmation as to whether he is dead. Two people were reported dead and seven others arrested during the raid. The police said the operation was targeted at Abaaoud, but the Paris prosecutor told journalists at the end of the raid that it was still unclear whether he was in the apartment at the time.
The apartment is located less than two kilometers away from the Stade de France stadium, which was one of the locations of the terror attacks. Three suicide bombers blew themselves up near the stadium during an international football match between France and Germany on Friday, with French President Francois Hollande in attendance. As many as 129 people were killed in the attacks.
