Guinea declared free of Ebola after 2,500 deaths
Liberia is the only west African country that is still battling the virus, having lost 4,800 lives to it so far.
The World Health Organisation on Tuesday declared Guinea free of Ebola, leaving Liberia the only country that is still affected by the virus. Sierra Leona was announced free of the epidemic in November. The outbreak began in Guinea in December 2013 before spreading to Liberia and Sierra Leone. The epidemic led to economic impacts, besides the loss of life, including a decrease in trade and tourism in the countries hit by it.
A ceremony will be held in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, on Wednesday to mark the end of the epidemic in the country. United Nations reports say more than 6,000 children have been orphaned by the disease, and by November this year, it had claimed at least 11,313 lives.
Liberia has lost around 4,800 lives to the virus, and was declared Ebola-free twice this year, but new cases arose after both the announcements.
