P Chidambaram’s wife Nalini named in Saradha scam chargesheet
While she is not an accused or a witness, the police said she was privy to information on the case.
Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s wife Nalini was named in the latest chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the Saradha chit fund scam. Nalini Chidambaram was the lawyer for Manoranjana Sinh, who was detained for questioning in October during the investigation into the scam. Sinh’s husband, former minister Matang Sinh, is a main accused in the case, and still in custody. The new chargesheet, filed on Monday, names Nalini Chidambaram, along with the Sinhs, Saradha group Chairman Sudipta Sen and businessman Santanu Ghosh.
The Times of India reported that Nalini Chidambaram was neither named as an accused nor a witness, but as someone privy to information concerning the case. Her name had also come up as her professional fees had been paid by money earned from the chit fund scam. The report adds that banking details show she was paid around Rs 66 lakh between June 2010 and September 2012, but that tax papers filed by the Saradha group show a payment of Rs 1.5 crore made to her between March and June 2011.
Sinh, Sen and Ghosh, along with their companies GNN India and Global automobiles, have been charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal breach of trust for the thousands of crores of investor money which was lost after the Ponzi scheme collapsed in 2013. It is alleged that Sinh's company GNN India had received large amount of funds from Saradha group.
